Borrowed this off Snuggly last night. Started reading about 12, didn't go to bed until half 3. It's a really good read, although I suspect my love of shooty war games and films, and being an all round bad-ass (may be false), as well as a male, fuels my want to read stuff like this. Although it's very different from what you'd expect - not much guts & guns (yet, only about a quarter of the way through), but a very good account of what goes through a soldier's mind under conditions that I can only imagine.
I wasn't sure if it was meant to be a real or fictional account of the Gulf War, so I looked it up...big mistake - they're making a film of it, with the gurning Jake Gyllenhall and oscar-baiter-weiner Jamie Foxx. I've got to try damn hard now not to imagine Swofford with a whiny child-voice, and big eyes, being chased by awful CGI wolves.
Excellent book though - I want to read it now, but have work to do.

Just over half way through now - this bloke is a talented writer. Shame I read it all in the voice of Whiny Gyllenhall (in my head, not out loud). Good book, cheers Snugs.
