At a time when rock music is so strong in the charts and minds, still nobody knows about these guys.
A 4 piece from Maryland, they have been going for over 10 years now with no sign of wear and tear.
They are:
Neil Fallon: Vocal World
Tim Sult: Guitar World
Dan Maines: Bass World
Jean-Paul Gaster: Drum World
They started off as typical shouty hardcore, but over the past decade have evolved into something else entirely.
From songs steeped in aggression and hostility, they have morphed into a huge, rolling blues/rock type of outfit.
Imagine Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater, Kyuss and Helmt all rolled into one dirty, loose-limber monster of a band.
Songs can be about any number of things:
Discovering your ex-girlfriend is now a leader of a terrorist movement in South America (Muchas Veces) to going fishing and discovering the body of John Wilkes Booth (I have the body of John Wilkes Booth..surprisingly).
Yes they have humour, but they are NOT a joke band by any means.
A furious mix of hard vocals, incredible guitar work and one of the tightest, most groove-soaked rhythm sections known to modern rock.
They aren’t afraid to use trombones, harmonicas and all manner of instruments to create some of the most downright funky, driving music you’ll hear this side of the 70’s.
Please, don’t ignore them anymore.
Go out and get any of the albums, although I would personally recommend Jam Room and the latest, Pure Rock Fury (now how can you not love a band that calls their album that?).
Forget white kids in shorts shouting about how hard life is at home when your mum makes you clean your room all the time (L Bizkit, Papa Roach etc), instead, open your ears and mind and discover one of the most underated and unheard of bands ever.
“What you need…you know I got…so hands up…who wants to rock?”
If Queens of The Stone Age can get airplay, there's no reason why Clutch, Fu Manchu, 60 Watt Shamen etc can't get there.
Clutch are playing London, Camden 16-6-01.
That will be an awesome gig.
One of my favourites Fu Manchu were in the same boat. Getting consistently great reviews for albums, but they'd always be hidden away in the general review section, and not as one of the 'featured' albums of the month. But now 'stoner' rock has become fashionable, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there is a lot of attention paid to their next CD (providing it's good of course).
