It's sterling. If the shops don't take it, the banks certainly will.
Big chains like M&S, and Debenhams definately will. Go into M&S, use £20 note to buy a pack of sweets, then get £19.50 back in change :D

As for "pounds and pence" it's a fair point, but the English don't accept it. Which is stupid.

Northern Ireland currency is still pounds and pence. Therefore, yes.
Though some smaller chains may refuse it. You're bound to pass atleast one bank in Scotland though.

I'm not near any where I'm staying as far as I know, although the minibus might pass one.
Even if they didn't, it probably wouldn't be very hard to go swap it in a bank.
The buggers better, we take theirs, and if they don't I'm screwed.
