I have .rar and .zip, tend to use .rar more often.

I use winrar but Uharc is used for really good compression of programs.

Or maybe .tgz. But still not sure what the advantages of them are.

Best based upon what?

Just for compressing files, or pictures, or music?

If pictures or music, do you want lossy or lossless?

If for files, do you mean best for speed? Compatibility? Compression ratio?
