It wasn't the same though, it didn't hit a huge climax like the album (and the book?) did. In the book he ran out to give himself up, that was going to be the end of it, he was going to die.

There was no climax in the movie, it just ended at a random point.

As with the book and other earlier versions of the story, there was never supposed to be a desperate fight where human's discover the secret of bacteria and spend some time planning a strategy to defeat the invaders. There was never a climactic battle that sees humanity overcome the aliens in a "just seconds to go" type of way. It was always a case of a quick finish thanks to some poor preparation on the part of the attackers. Its still fair to say it seemed rushed, but I just wanted to add that its meant to seem that way.
