In an age of electronic entertainment marked by greater and greater doses of reality, what is it about Mario, a 100% unreal adventuruer, that keeps him famous almost two decades after his introduction?
Maybe it's due to his origin... He wasn't designed from the ground up as a mascot like so many of today's 'heroes'. He wasn't randomly generated from some character making machine! He may not be 'real', but he is one of the most beloved videogaming characters EVER to grace any platform ever released and compared to some of today's so called gaming idols he is as real as the air we breathe!
There is also a certain humbleness about the man... he's no superhero but rather a working-class Joe, who rises to meet the call of adventure. He is a character people of all ages can relate to, and... or, empathize with. And Mario himself, being so humble, has remained remarkably quiet about his past and prefers to let his accomplishments do the talking.
Hopefully, Mario will have a very good future in the industry, but in the days of Snake Solid and Perfect Dark is there room for the most renound figure and sole heir to the videogaming throne?! I say yes!
Although most children of today have lost almost all meaning of tradition, fun is one tradition they haven't lost. And through Mario and their number of consoles, Nintendo have provided this fun for the millions!
I would much rather escape on a wild adventure with Mario rather than, crawl about in the gloomy depths of the swamps in the soon to be released 'Evil Dead' or 'Alone in the Dark 4', Mario has something that can't be found many other places, something so special that it will keep him 'in the mix' for a very, very, very, long time!
And this is... Well, I can't tell you, some say describing GOD is impossible, and although Mario isn't a GOD, it is almost as hard to describe how wonderful his adventures are! Even when facing Bowser, the game shows so much tranquility and peace... I love it.
I wouldn't miss out on the GBA or Gamecube for the world, but not for Star Wars and Raven Blade or Tony Hawks and Diddy Kong, but for my childhood hero, a simple Italian plumber who has made growing up such a pleasant experience.
So, in the words of Peach... Thank You, Mario!
And keep it up!
