The future of online gaming, contrary to popular belief belongs with the PC ONLY. While it must be said that the DC, PS2 and X-box all have online capabilities, the only way that gaming online will become popular will be if all the lag times etc are the same.

Anyone that has tried playing Quake 3 on a 56Kbps modem will know that there will always be someone that has an advantage like having a cable connection.
While everyone spouts on about how the PS2 and X-Box will have broadband, what the majority of these people dont check is that they have digital phone lines. The majority of BT phone lines are analogue, and as such will be unsuitable for broadband internet, and so a trusty 56K one will have to suffice.

Even though the PS2 at least will have special versions of RealPlayer and Flash, the amount of freedom, such promised by Sony etc. isnt as much as you think. Sony may only allow you to connect to the internet with one ISP, and may charge you extra, because they have the power to.

If people want the freedom and overhyped gaming capabilities of the internet, then I'm afraid that the only way to go is to buy a PC

I haven't had any experience with xDSL, but NTL's Cable is very unreliable - it's running at dialup speed at the moment, and it was down all of friday night/saturday morning. My ping playing Counter-Strike can go from 30ms to 2500ms depending on the conditions at the time, and even broadband is painfully slow compared to a LAN.

I doubt about the one ISP thing. It's pointless. If they do that, you can just go out and buy a USB modem for the same money.
