Formula 1 fans are being offered the chance to vote for next season’s qualifying format.
The vote is taking place on the official F1 website (www.f1.com), with fans asked to consider two brand new qualifying methods.
A majority of respondents in the recent FIA/AMD F1 survey favoured a return to the old style hour-long, multi-lap sessions.
The latest qualifying suggestions meet that demand – but each comes with a twist.
Proposal one is an aggregated system that splits qualifying into two 25-minute halves with a 10-minute break in the middle.
Drivers have unlimited laps and no fuel restrictions.
The only stipulation is that they must set a time in each ‘half’ of the session.
Those times would then be added together to form the final grid order.
Proposal two also removes fuel and lap stipulations, and builds up to a 30-minute shoot-out between the top 10 drivers.
The slowest five drivers are withdrawn from the session at 15 minute intervals in the first half of the session, leaving the quickest ten to fight it out for the leading grid spots in the final half hour.
Full details can be found at www.f1.com.
I'm glad that both options have the cars run in proper qualifying trim, and with unlimited new tires too! I think both have their merits. The second one could be rubbish in a rain affect session - but could ultimately be the more exciting to watch.
Whaddya reckon?
I think the first option would be best, and smaller teams can still get TV coverage by going out first in both of the 25 minute sessions.
Qualifying used to be excting, especially in the dying minutes. Let's hope that the new system brings that back!
With the current fuel strategies dominating F1, pole position doesn't have the real advantage it once had. When it comes down to it, if pole position doesn't always equal victory, I might as well know what the fastest car around the track on low fuel is. In my eyes, that's what pole position meant.
With both options, it's always gonna be pretty obvious whose gonna be at the top.
