Someone I know described Nicholas Cage in serious roles as "tortured."

I think I may have laughed.

It's nothing to do with the aloofness of watching foreign films with a cocked beret on in a Baghdad warzone to highlight the futility of man. It's the laziness of taking a good idea and trying to replicate it by injecting more cash and bigger named stars, then assuming people will watch and prefer your newer, shinier version over the original, despite any of the qualities it will have inevitably lost in Nicholas Cage's 2-pier trailer.

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance
Oldboy
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

All by Park Chan Wook.

They're doing an American remake of Oldboy starring Nicolas Cage of all people. I'd quite like to see him locked up forever, let alone 15 years. He looks like a sad horse.

Oldboy is the second in a series of three revenge films. I don't think the third is released yet, and I don't think they're connected. I haven't seen the first, called something for Mr Vengeance (for anyone who can be bothered to check), about black market organ exchanges and a sister, or something.

Predictable that the Americans would remake anything even slightly good, but disappointing nonetheless. Although if they do it well it'll be superb. It's one of those films that makes you want to learn the language just to hear how cool some of the lines are to actually hear. Like when he says to the delivery boy "Tell your chef to add less salt," before kicking ass.

The Korean version of this was excellent - but I don't think I could bring myself round to watching this without the 'Korean-ness'.

Also, isn't OldBoy part of a trilogy of some sort - the character that falls off the roof of a building is from another one of the Korean directors films?

I'm just waiting for them to do a remake of Battle Royale starring Mary Kate and Ashley.

Sounds perfect!
