I suggested to a friend on MSN, checking IGN for a WotW review and I admit that they probably arent the most reliable source, but I didnt expect this... To be honest he's an English student, so I half expected something this epic when riled...

Me: Hey
Me: I still thought we were meant to be seeing WotW today
Him: dunno if WotW will be a good film or not
Me: it should be, I might read ign's review
Me: or see what score they gave it
Him: hmm, yes
Him: you could take an awfully written, poorly edited, badly designed and generally suspect VIDEO GAME site and see what they have to say about, erm, a film
Him: or you could try a site actually made with the concept of reviewing movies and not just wringing an extra few thousand out of the advertising contract
Me: ign arent devil spawn you know...
Him: ...
Him: ok, sure
Me: hmmm
Him: so, what did your dark masters have to say about the flick?
Me: ign?
Me: not very positive at the moment
Me: you know the adverts are bearable
Him: they're all over the place!
Him: often you'll have to navigate 6 or 7 seperate pages to get to the review
Me: It took me two pages to find what I wanted
Him: and then you're blattered with on screen documents.
Him: flash adverts
Him: banners
Him: popups
Him: but what's this!
Him: give them a sh&t load of money instead, and you don't HAVE to see the adverts!
Him: oh, don't be deceived!
Him: you may get lucky on one trip
Him: but the times when IGN decides to 'insert' it's advertising pages are completely randomised
Him: you might get one before entering the site
Him: one getting to the film review archive
Him: one getting to the actual review
Him: one betwixt each page of said review
Me: literally took me 3 clicks on 2 pages and i was there
Me: come-on its not that bad
Him: it's obvious that they know what an evil they perpertrate
Him: when they actually advertise methods for getting rid of their advertisements
Him: this is before we mention whoring out the theme of their website for 'great promotions', receiving countless backhanders to put themselves into the richly-lined pockets of the industry heavyweights, an utterly banal 'grasp' of what it is to be a gamer
Me: errrm yes...
Him: ...is not a valid response to points which I assure you can all be demonstrated
Him: not that they need to be, as a visit to IGN is in itself a demonstration
Him: what did they have to say about the film, then?
Me: i still dont mind ign, whilst the scores they give may not always be the best for deciding on a game purchase, they give a number of opinions which ultimately do help
Him: yes! we have the developers opinion, the publishers opinion, the opinion of the marketers...
Me: they arent always great, but you cant overlook them just cus of adverts and the fact they may or may not have sold out
Him: "the fact they may or may not have sold out" is one of the primary factors in my decision
Him: the adverts are inconvenient, intrusive, and cannot be justified by anything other than corporate greed
Me: but how many sites dont have adverts?
Him: It's not adverts that I object to
Him: it's the amount of adverts
Him: and the lack of tact with which these corporate behegons scream their wares in a Xtreme Nitro Fuzion GOOO! sort of way
Him: as if we all watched MTV and snowboarded down mountains at the weekend
Him: YEAH!
Me: it is bad i agree, but content is generally good, unless you have some reason why it isnt
Him: I just object to the style personally
Him: it tries to hard to be hardcore gamer
Him: awkwardly self aware turns of phrase, name-checks, and so on
Him: and then when that fails, you have the cynical buisness roots coming through
Him: exclusives! interviews! this site only!
Him: if we can't beat the competition, we'll just buy em!
Him: (merger with gamespy)
Me: i dont see a problem with that, they normally are exclusive
Him: to the detriment of the wider gaming media
Him: it's a parallel reflection of the curse in the industry
Him: Microsoft buying up all the hardware patent
Him: Sony buying up all the advertising slots
Him: EA buying up everyone, ever, that can code, and any IPs that they might have about them
Me: i suppose
Me: Then again we do have a choice, and people still buy them.
Him: I can't think of a single EA game I've bought in the past 3 years
Him: I'm not saying they're not worth playing
Me: exactly
Him: but what I am saying is that I object to the methods they use which will be harmful to the industry in the future
Me: i can see your standpoint
Him: and will encourage an environment where originality and creativity are spurned to churn out fancier graphics
Me: well EA arent really about the graphics either
Him: oh come on
Him: if it's not graphics it's finding a series
Him: and then making sequels
Him: either way the end product is the same
Him: developers - what remain of them after EA's ruthless buy and and squash em policy - will no longer be encouraged to improve upon what they have
Him: because
Him: where will the competition be?
Him: if we all take this opinion
Him: "Then again we do have a choice, and people still buy them."
Him: then we're accepting that we don't want GOOD games, we'll chow down on any old crap and we'll be happy to spend a lot for the privelege
Me: you've twisted my quote, my point was that you seemingly despise microsoft, sony et al but you still use/buy their products
Him: I wasn't twisting, I was just extending the implications of your attitude
Him: "all fair play"!
Him: "let em do what they want, at the end of the day, we'll keep buying"
Me: I explained what I meant, and I meant nothing more than that.
Him: I know
Him: but their are implications to the standpoints we take today on the way things turn out in the future
Him: and for your information
Him: I DON'T buy EA games, I DON'T buy Sony products, and I DON'T buy games or consoles from microsoft either
Him: I will happily discuss a game from anyone on its merits and failings
Him: it's what I love to do
Me: tbh i've kinda forgotten what the point of this was
Him: well, if you can't be bothered to keep up
Him: I might just go and play some CoH
Me: i believe the point was being made about ign, not msoft or sony, so yes it is extremely off topic
Me: tbh every console has its own fanbase, Xbox, and PS2 all have their merits, they shouldnt be so easily dismissed for their 'marketing strategies'
Me: and despite how outrageously fun this was, i'm off to do something more productive...
Me: i'll leave you to CofH

I wrote 'betwixt' in none of my exams the other day.
It was very boring, as you may have realised.

Anywho ... your friend is right, although rather tedious.
