Qualifying: Salo takes first career pole position
Race: A first career winner is crowned but an ugly incident affects title challenge

Mika Salo has taken pole position for the British Grand Prix. It's his first career pole position at the 46th time of asking and it's MG F1's first of 2005.

The weather was perfect as Salo pipped a flying Jordan of Fisichella into 2nd. 3rd was the B.A.R of Pantano, desperate for a good result. 4th is Montoya, pleased to be ahead of Pizzonia. 5th completes a good qualifying session for Jordan with Firman. 6th is World Champion Baumgartner, slipping away from the title hunt. 7th is Pizzonia, despite having a good grid position, he will not be liking the fact that his 3 closest Championship contenders are ahead of him. Villeneuve completes the top 8.

Full Qualifying Results:

1st Salo (Biggie Little) 1m20.376s
2nd Fisichella (Badgerman) 1m20.417s - (+0.041s)
3rd Pantano (Chris) 1m20.490s - (+0.114s)
4th Montoya (Afrojoe) 1m20.499s - (+0.123s)
5th Firman (Notorious Biggles) 1m20.500s - (+0.124s)
6th Baumgartner (Grandprix) 1m20.522s - (+0.146s)
7th Pizzonia (Icarus) 1m20.541s - (+0.165s)
8th Villeneuve (Mike Swade) 1m20.549s - (+0.173s)
9th Raikkonen (Ineedsleep) 1m20.565s - (+0.189s)
10th Button (Der Nazi) 1m20.575s - (+0.199s)
11th Webber (Shelljed) 1m20.592s - (+0.216s)
12th Barrichello (Lipe) 1m20.596s - (+0.220s)
13th Alonso (Jules) 1m20.610s - (+0.234s)
14th Karthikeyan (Ortega) 1m20.618s - (+0.242s)
15th Heidfeld (Shadow) 1m20.647s - (+0.271s)
16th Klien (Figo) 1m20.662s - (+0.286s)
17th De La Rosa (Virtuoso) 1m20.664s - (+0.288s)
18th Verstappen (Jae) 1m20.684s - (+0.308s)
19th Panis (Foreman) 1m20.716s - (+0.340s)
20th M Schumacher (Vampyr) 1m20.766s - (+0.390s)
21st R Schumacher (N/A) 1m20.885s - (+0.509s)
22nd Sato (Poopots) 1m21.077s - (+0.701s)

It certainly was a rare occurance, perfect conditions for qualifying and race at Silverstone. Salo got off the line well and took an early lead but Silverstone is a good track for overtaking and Pantano, who was now in 2nd, squeezed past Salo to take the lead on lap 1.

A Baumgartner mistake on lap 2 dropped him out of the points, while Ralf Schumacher had a nasty spin to remain at the back of the field. Klien had an off on lap 4 and Alonso spun trying to overtake Webber on lap 7.

Villeneuve looked like he had a quick car underneath him as he was passing cars all over the place. Unfortunately, he had one of those days where he kept making mistakes. Spins on laps 10, 24 while trying to take Verstappen and lap 31 scuppered his chances of a points finish and it could even have been a win.

Lap 11 and Fisichella was starting to show his speed. He overtook Pantano and took the lead, increasing his lead over the next 10 laps to around 4 seconds.

Lap 21 and a big scrap for 8th was ensuing. 5 cars were fighting over the same piece of track but one car couldn't hack the pace. De La Rosa's engine blew right in the middle of the chase and he had to retire.

The race was in that strange period where the 2 stoppers were lurking and the 1 stoppers were in the lead. The race eventually settled down and it was Pantano that managed to come out in front.

Lap 33 and Firman made the first of a couple of key errors that cost him a points finish. The 2nd error came on lap 39 when he and Klien tangled during an overtaking move and resulted in both spinning.

The key moment of the race and perhaps the Championship came on lap 50 when Pizzonia and Montoya were scrapping for 5th place. Montoya had been a thorn in Pizzonia's side all day and Pizzonia had enough. Pizzonia tried an daring, perhaps even reckless move on Montoya and got it all wrong. Pizzonia and Montoya spin, Pizzonia somehow managing to stay in the points but Montoya fared much worse by slipping out of the points.

Panis was only the 2nd retirement of the race on lap 56 when his car developed a water leak. The race was on for the crucial points finishes and it was Pantano with a fairly comfortable lead. Could anyone catch him?

No, because Pantano came through to win the British Grand Prix, his first career victory and perhaps a shot at the title too. 2nd for the 2nd time in a row was Fisichella and he is now the main challenger to Pizzonia. Salo gets a podium finish for 3rd but he'll be disappointed he didn't convert the pole position into victory. Barrichello came out of nowhere to take 4th and keep Renault firmly at the front of the Constructors Championship. 5th was Baumgartner who had to do a lot of overtaking. 6th was Pizzonia, who won't have won any fans for his move on Montoya and his profiting from it. 7th was Raikkonen and Karthikeyan picks up 1 point for 8th.

PREDICTION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

6 predictors again this week so 10 of 1st, 6 for 2nd, 4 for 3rd, 3 for 4th, 2 for 5th and 1 for 6th with the bonus point for the closest to the tie breaker answer. Here are the results:

1st Ineedsleep 10pts (21pts - +4.878s)
2nd Jae 6pts (17pts - +4.977s)
3rd Chris 4pts (10pts - +2.852s)
4th Shadow 3pts + 1pt (9pts - +2.406s) - THE CLOSEST
5th Badgerman 2pts (8pts - +5.697s)
6th Shelljed 1pt (5pts)

So, here is how the table looks after Round 11:

1st Chris 70pts (4 wins)
2= Shadow 55pts (2 wins)
2= Ineedsleep 55pts (2 wins)
4th Badgerman 45pts (1 win)
5th Shelljed 39pts (1 win)
6th Jae 35pts (1 win)
7th Icarus 33pts
8= Foreman 12pts
8= Jules 12pts
10th Biggie Little 8pts
11th Notorious Biggles 5pts

The season draws ever closer to a close as we complete Round 11 of 19 and Pizzonia only limits the damage with his dirty move with an 11 point lead from 13. Renault escapes from Silverstone still with that 13 point lead intact, after cancelling out Fisichella's 2nd place with 4th for Barrichello and 6th for Pizzonia. The Prediction Championship leader, Chris, still has a 15 point lead at the top but Ineedsleep makes it a three way fight at the top.

Round 12 of 19 is in Germany and everyone should be thinking about what tracks they would like to see for Rounds 18 and 19. Points are going to be ever more crucial as the end of the season nears.

Ah, that would explain why updates weren't plastered all over the fan sites.

There are 3 Championships to go for. The Drivers and Constructors Championship are run on Grand Prix 4 and they are pretty much out of your control. You just follow the driver to see how well he does or doesn't do.

The Prediction Championship is where you can have some input. You basically predict the results for the race in question and if you score more points than anyone else, you take the race victory and 10 points. There are usually 6-8 predictors, so any kind of prediction set will score points.

Okay, you can have Ralf (isn't having a bad season so far) and thanks for entering your predictions. You'll understand how it works when I post the next round. It will probably be Monday afternoon because I got back late today.

Badgerman

I've not found any decent updates or patches for GP4. GP3 had loads of stuff coming out for it but I don't think anyone has made a successful editor for GP4, meaning any adjustments to the program is impossible.

Gp, I just re-installed GP4 and I'm looking for updates/patches I can download, I've checked a few sites but the only downloads seem to be ridiculously specific like some pitcrew blokes wedding ring.

Are there any general patches that update the game with the drivers, cars, teams and whatnot?

I assume I win points if my driver does well?

I Otherwise I gain points through (purely random?) predictions.

Or else I guess the only basis for my predictions is on the qualifying which happens before you announce the questions?

Yeah stick me down as Ralf and I'll put up a prediction nowish.
