Right - the 2 mobile processors, Turion and M. Now I know that the Turion is 64bit and pretty much a spruced up (or down, depending on how you look at it) Athlon 64, that it's slightly less power efficient (35W rather than 27W for the most part), and also that it's a LOT cheaper. But is it worth the extra £200 or so to get an M? Do any of you know much about it?

I looked on the Internet but as the Turion is so new there dont seem to be any comparisons, aside from AMDs own skewed head-to-heads (For the gaming they put a dedicated ATI GFXC in their machine, while leaving the Intel model with on board graphics - I wonder why it turned out better). For comparison purposes, here are 2 Acer laptops:

Acer Travelmate 8010:
Pentium M 2Ghz
1GB RAM
ATI MRX700
£1300

Acer Aspire 5020:
AMD Turion ML-34 (1.8Ghz)
1GB RAm
ATI MRX700
£900

That's a £400 difference - is that Turion really that much worse to deserve a £400 price cut? Also I hear that the Pentium M will be falling in price soon (in reponse tothe Turion and because of the new 2.2Ghz M), so would I be better off waiting and seeing that M laptop drop by £200 or so or getting the Turion soon? Any knowledge/help is greatly appreciated.

Mmm. Carbon Fibre.

Apparently it's $100 cheaper and 10% faster.

It doesn't matter anymore. I won't be getting one until September (great!), so by then I can buy that ferrari one with carbon fibre case.

What graphics card does the Aspire have though?

Raedon 9700/9800 is getting old.

Aye I know that but no one really seems to have a MT-34 in a decent model. Well I haven't looked too hard, but yer.

The Turion has both a 35w and 25w processor. The ML series are cheaper but are 35w and the MT series is more expensive but has 25w power usage so more efficent.

Speedwise it's probably about as fast as an Athlon 64 3000+ or 3200+ I'd say.
The 2800+ is 1.8GHz but only has 512k cache.

Yes that's what I was thinking. Windows 64bit isn't too far off, although I don't know how different it will be.

The only problem with the Turion is the power consumption and the extra heat of a 64bit processor.

I won't be of much use to you, but in my own opinion, the Turion will give you that comfort blanket for the future.

64 bit operating systems will be coming out in force soon.
