For years and years console companies have been battling out over prices and games on their machines each trying to get ore sales than the other. Only since the Snes and megadrive has the competition gotten so fierce and really started getting out of hand with a lot of hype. Back then the two main companies were Nintendo and sega, the golden oldies who have thoroughly entertained us for 10 + years. Then we saw an unexpected turn when Sony joined the console wars with the playstation in hand.

But at the launch of the psx it seemed to be more of a craze then a usual console with so many people who had never been near a console before were buying them just because all of their friends did. Now I am not sure why Sony pulled into the console wars but they are doing very well.

Then we had the usual battle for 5 years with the psx and n64 some of the best consoles ever and then suddenly another opponent came along… Bill ‘bowl boy’ Gates announced the launch of the Xbox, a console with a big x on the top. This console would have massive power a bit like a pc but would the games be as good? The question of course was, how are four companies battle it out, which console should I purchase, all seem excellent there are so many great games on each.

Well the answer of course was that sega were pulling out of the console market after many years of happy gaming. They decided that their consoles were not top notch but on the other hand their games were. They are now giving away some of their top titles to other companies, something quite rare as companies does swap games but not their best ones. Sega announced that they would be making 65 more games for the dreamcast and 63 others to be shared around the other consoles. The Xbox will get: house of the dead 3, crazy taxi next, and a new jet set radio. I am pretty jealous because I would love all these games for my DC but sadly I wont get them…

So now there are three companies in the running, but will another drop out soon to be replaced by another electronics company. Soon Nintendo could quit console production and be replaced by Panasonic who announce that they will start to make consoles form now on. It seems as most electronic companies are taking a look into the console market as there is a lot of money in it theses days. But if more companies want to take part in it will the quality of games go down?

If companies like Panasonic do not chose to go into the console business I can still see them being involved with games in some way. Whether it be publishing or developing games we could see some major changes soon. As the consoles markets intrigue grows so will the money going into it will and I think in five years time there will be a new company with an all-new machine. Of course I can bet my lucky stars that Sony and Nintendo will making games for a while yet, but I think if the Xbox is a blooper then Bill Gates will sink back to his little pc and stays there for a while until eventually his bitterness builds up so much that he tries to get revenge on all he companies that were just that much better than him.

Anyway I will always support Nintendo and buy sega games because I know that I can trust them to give me some quality entertainment.

Time will tell…

Cheers,

I think it'll be great, however Nintendo are leaving it up to Panasonic on whether the launch will leave Japan! I might import one.....

Well there will be a DVD Gamecube made by Mashiuta (not sure about spelling), this is basically the Japanese name for Panasonic, the DVD Gamecube is hoping to be launched along side the non-dvd for a bit more of the price, I think this was a reason why they delayed the launch in Japan, and was a hidden factor. Nintendo are still deciding whether to launch the system in other places in the world.. what may boost the chances of other launch areas is the fact that Panasonic DVD players are nearly always multi-regional!

There you go!

The underlying problem with tying too many features into hardware is that, basically, there are more components that could go wrong.

How absolutley frustrating would it be to find that you could no longer play games on your wonder-hybrid machine because it had gotten stuck in kari-oke machine mode?

Not really, except the games would be better ; )

This reply is not serious. It is a joke. Please do not treat it as anything else.

There's been talk of TV's incorporating PS2 technology since the machine was first announced, too.

Mind you, would a Panasonic DVD-playing GameCube (or more likely, a GameCube-playing DVD player) really be any different to a PS2? :-)

And what about all those complaints that 'games consoles should play games and nothing else'... depends which side of the fence you're on, I suppose - if your console doesn't play DVD's, a DVD-playing console is a bad thing. Of course, if someone then releases a DVD player which plays your console's games, it suddenly becomes a great thing...

Ho hum!

Anyway, on a more serious note... the problem with combined items like that is, if one thing goes wrong, you're without the other. Fortunately, I didn't get my PS2 for the DVD player, so if it *should* go wrong...

I have a feeling Panasonic are doing their own DVD-Playing Gamecube....

Although I'm not sure, you'll have to ask Er-No or Grix..

Bloody Know-it-alls!
