Qualifying: Firman hits the front
Race: Alonso holds on in tight finish
It was perfect conditions for the European Grand Prix weekend as Firman came through to the front of the field and join an elite group on 5 career pole positions.
He was the only one to break into the 1 minute 14's, edging out a race winner already this season, Alonso. Verstappen was 3rd ahead of Button's B.A.R, which is in desperate need of points. Button is in a Minardi sandwich with Baumgartner in 5th. World Championship leader, Pizzonia, continues to put his car in the top 8 with 6th. De La Rosa starts 7th and Pantano completes the top 8.

The race was go and Firman gets swamped at the start and loses the lead to Alonso and also 2nd place to Verstappen. Raikkonen spins early in the race on lap 2, losing valuable time and places. It's trouble for Barrichello as Heidfeld spins in front of him, both of them losing time on lap 3.
Verstappen was on less fuel at this point and he breezed past Alonso on lap 4 to take the lead and he began to pull away. Michael Schumacher hits De La Rosa trying to overtake and both spin on lap 5. Webber spins on lap 5 trying to take Salo and spends the next 9 laps trying to escape the gravel trap. He manages to do so, but his race is pretty much over and finishes the race classified as a 'Did Not Finish'.
Verstappen's two stop strategy was working perfectly until his engine cried 'Enough!' on lap 19. Verstappen's only victory was 2 years ago at the European Grand Prix but the amount of retirements from the lead has cost him dearly.
Heidfeld was the next to go when his car developed transmission problems on lap 21. Just around the corner, Raikkonen was to suffer the same fate as he retires with transmission problems on lap 21. Villeneuve was looking to break into the points but scuppered his chances with a spin on lap 24. Fisichella is having a poor weekend and compounds his misery with a spin on lap 27. Montoya sitting in the points ahead of Pizzonia now but under a bit of pressure, it's enough and Montoya spins on lap 31.
Barrichello wasn't having a great weekend and his race was over on lap 31 when his right rear wheel developed problems which forced him to retire. Panis took a stab at getting past Montoya but spins on lap 34. The race then hit a quiet patch as the 1 pit stop and 2 pit stop strategies played out, until Baumgartner retired on lap 59 with transmission problems to end Minardi's day, which looked like a big points haul at one stage.
So, into the final stages of the Grand Prix and Alonso had a slight lead but Button and Firman were catching quickly and were definitely going to catch him with a number of laps to go. With a few laps to go, Firman just couldn't maintain the pace, leaving it to Button to try and steal the win. Button was the faster car and was just trying to find a way through.
He couldn't do it, as Alonso just beat Button to the line to take his 2nd career win, which is his 2nd win in 3 races. Button takes 2nd and it's a finish he desperately needed. 3rd goes to Firman, which is 2 points finishes in a row. Ralf Schumacher takes 4th place and Klien continues a solid rookie season with 5th. Pantano completes a much needed B.A.R points haul with 6th. Karthikeyan gets his best SR F1 finish with 7th and Michael Schumacher takes the last points place for 8th.
