Just finished reading this, it's a soldier's-eye account of the first Gulf War, and exactly what went on behind the media hoo-hah and the government lies. There's no gripping battle stories, no patriotic chest-pounding and no frillying up the edges - in case you didn't already know, war is horrible, dirty, terrifying and at times, very very boring indeed. The author, Anthony Swofford, rose through the ranks from boot camp to become an elite sniper, although he never actually kills a single soul. His accounts are all very well delivered, never sugar-coating the fact that he had a torrid time and wasn't at all comfortable fighting for the reasons he was supposed to be fighting for.

There's also so brilliant stories of what soldiers do when they get bored, how they find out about their partners' infidelities and some 'friendly fire' incidents recounted in chilling detail ("it's not friendly fire, it's f***ed fire"). If you want to read an Andy McNab story about how he killed seventeen Gurkhas with just his erect penis and a pencil sharpener then you're better off sticking with that kind of boy's own nonsense - this is what war is really like, hot, sweaty, merciless and pointless.

It appears Sam Mendes is adapting it into a film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx. Oh dear.
