What? I here you say.
The pack is a super patch of the game with better textures player models and weapon models. Whoo hoo! Who said Half-Life was dead.
Maybe Microsoft are quiet intelligent after all. The XBox is almost identical to a PC. Maybe they did this so PC mods of games would work on the XBox version as well. It would certainly be a plus for XBox owners if they could tap into the huge PC communities for games like UT, Q3A etc.
With Half-Life, as with other great games like Unreal Tournament, Diablo II: you name it, if it's popular and on a PC, you'll get online support for it in the form of patches, help files, mods, add-ons, extra weapons, new skins and so on, something that up until now has been relatively unseen in consoles.
The only console game that I ever downloaded a mod for was Skies of Arcadia, where you could download and extra weapon, a new character and a new enemy from the DreamArena website. Something I had never done before, but yes, it did enhance the gameplay somewhat.
It seems that so far developers and publishers have yet to provide this kind of support for our consoles, which have modems included so there's no real excuse for it. In the future, I think EVERY console game will have its own website, with downloads, patches etc. One of the most popular mods of all time has to be Counter Strike, there's a whole community based around it now. Perhaps we will see this trend exploding to a fully fledged obsession when games are released next year in their new formats, with every game having more of a community built around it than ever before.
