Not the newest boxset to hit the shelves and i wish i had known to watch this great series a few years ago. Spurred on by a few friends and the release of season 5, i figured i would give Dr. House a try and make my own mind up on what has been one of the biggest shows to come over from America for some time.
The concept of the show is simple, in the first few minutes of an episode you meet a character who suddenly becomes very ill for an unknown reason and has to be taken to hospital quickly. Gregory House M.D. who is played by Hugh Laurie (seems weird him having an American accent but you get used to it, honest) is a rather odd doctor, he only sees a few patients and has 3 younger doctors at his disposal to help him with his work. He is an expert at diagnosing strange illnesses and is one of the best doctors in the hospital. He only takes on cases that seem interesting to him and you learn over the first series that he has a complex personality which makes him the character he is. He suffered from blood clot that caused his muscle to die in his leg and as left him with a walking stick and an unhealthy addiction to pain killers. He has few friends at a first glance but there are plenty of people who do care for him, despite they are not always open about it.
So House takes on these odd cases and has to look at all angles to find out what has gone wrong and why they are ill. Normally the first diagnosis is not right and things turn for the worse, but the group normally pull through, i do not want to spoil any of the episodes by saying if people die or not but i did find it rather comical that almost everyone who enters the hospital has a seizure at some point, i am unsure if this normally happens in hospitals or if they writers liked to include it, but i did often find it repetitive to have a seizure at least 5 out of 7 episodes. Still, it takes nothing away from the mystery of the case and the brilliant acting that makes you feel part of the team as you try to think what has caused the illness and where the patient might have lied etc. It is an addictive sensation that both myself and my girlfriend are unable to kick, it has that “we will just watch one more” factor.
During the first series there are no major plots that link everything together like you would see in Lost or 24, but there are relationships that form and references to things you might not know if you have not been with it the whole way, this is not a bad thing as it does allow most people to jump in and enjoy it, but i am a fan of deeper plots in a series. The individual episodes have plenty of tense moments and turns to keep me happy and with Hugh Laurie there is a fantastic humour involved. House is over confident in himself and is quick to say everyone else is wrong, even if they are right.
Hugh Laurie is the shinning star in a great cast, but the relationship he has with the various doctors is always interesting and not much is given away so far, maybe in series 2 things will develop and the personal lives of the medical cast will come out more. You do learn the odd fact about House’s helpers or other co-workers, but there is nothing which has a major grip on what will happen next, which is a shame in some aspect but it allows you to sit back and enjoy the episode that is on.
I am sure plenty of you have seen House and are big fans, i can’t recommend it enough to anyone, it has comedy, drama and mysteries. All of which make a great bundle for a brilliant series. The only flaws are that some people might need more intense action than an illness, the background stories are often weak in comparison to the main one and means there is no real tie to seeing the next one. But you will be hooked to seeing more because of how well the cast come together to create a real life environment that you feel part of and the mysteries of the illnesses that occur will keep you coming back. Oh and Hugh Laurie is just brilliant in the role of House and has enhanced his reputation even further by playing him.
If you have not seen this yet then go buy series 1, it is cheap, there are plenty of episodes and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as i have, on that basis it has to get a solid;
9/10
> Is this a spin-off of Blackadder?
lol, sorry to disappoint you but no.
> House is the greatest thing ever created. FACT
lol well a 10/10 for Garin then, reinforces the fact you need to buy and watch House!
