Fun, excellent fun.

Very much what I hoped for, Command and Conquer meets Lord of the Rings with some class EA presentation (which they manage to pull off every time).

Played quite a few Acts already, a fair amount of variation with the environments, the scenes from the films are well scripted (Act 1 was kick ass with those big Ogre guys).

Visually it is extremely spanking, really vibrant colours, decent animations, good particle effects etc. A few jaggies around the characters can be ironed out with AA but that is pretty much the only fault I have found.

Audio wise as you can imagine it oWnZ.

The game feels very much like Command and Conquer: Generals meets Dawn of War which isn't a bad thing seeing as both those games are absolutely kick ass.

So yeah, like RTS/LOTR/Strategy/Fancy visuals/Bearded Warfare?

Grab it > Love it.

Fun? for a while it is, it’s an enjoyable lightweight strategy game, but I had problems with certain aspects of it. The limited levels in between the big feature fights such as Helms Deep and Mini Tirith where nothing short of tedious. Samey looking environments, samey sounding objectives against the same amount of enemies, some variety would have been nice here.

Then there’s the stupid upgrade system. Not only do you first have to have a building gain a ‘rank’ but you then have spend money on not just purchasing the upgrade, but buying it for every unit in the game. It’s a huge drain on resources and time and annoyed me to no end on some on the bigger skirmishes.

And lastly, some of the levels are insanely difficult. Helms Deep, pah, that’s nothing compared to Minis Tirith, a stupendously large Orc army against a handful of your own soldiers, no more space to train reinforcement, barely enough men to cover all areas of the walls and not to mention a drop in frame rate that slowed the action down to a snail pace. I’ll probably go back to it eventually, but not without a few cheats.

But, on the whole, enjoyable fluff. I liked being able to play as the bad guys and getting to burn down Ents while killing off half the fellowship before they even finished the first movie. The “Bad Guy” campaign was so much more fun than being the Good Guys.

I found it too limiting both in terms of the units you can make as well as the buildings and their placement.
