Without a question of doubt, (apart from music) video games and films are the two most popular forms of entertainment these days. We all go to the cinema to watch the latest release or just rent out a film to watch and most of us just love to relax and play on our favourite games. The reason I see these at the top are because they have genres, with genre’s you watch what you want, when you want and that’s the appeal.

With video games and films having a very close link with these genres it goes to show that they can be very similar indeed. Many video games are created to play like a movie and many films are made from video game plots. But that’s where I see that films have the upper hand, with their plots. I think films sell and appeal much more to more people as they have a stronger plot compared to say games. But then again video games are much more interactive and involving. Can you see the possibilities that could be made if these elements were to be put together?

As each release of a DVD comes the more interactive they are getting. Giving you an insight into the film itself and in some cases small games are put in with the extras in the theme of the film.

Let’s face it, it seems as though the nation has become obsessed with interactivity.

But if a video games elements were added with that of a film, great gameplay with a strong plot, what could we expect? And in what form would it take?

Playing through the eyes of the film would be far to advance for this day or age, but maybe in the future. But, what if there were points in a film where you could help out James Bond in a DVD or stroke the cute little cats in 101 Dalmatians? Small chances of interactivity like this will surely make you feel much more involved with the film.

Here I am not talking about major interactivity that will change the plot of the film, though this could be done. Wouldn’t it just be great if your actions decided which way the film went and ended?

But the way I see it more to the present is DVD’s including an extra where you have a small hand, used as the mouse pointer, in the DVD. During certain points of the film you have the chance to do things with that hands, interact with the surroundings just like in a video game.

I can see this happening in the future and what a great idea it would be. If things were to change even further in the future and you get to choose where the films go in plot terms then it could be a far advance forward in the film world, or even a major flaw.

One things for sure though, this would have to take place on DVD’s I just can’t see 100 viewers in a cinema playing with the film.

You also have to ask yourself, how far can we push films and technology in them these days?

Your views please.

It should cinverge with games until we have a proper VR story system where you are the main character. Like the Hollow Deck on Star Trek Voyager.
