Not quite sure which of the FoG's this should go in, so excuse me if it's the wrong one...

I've already asked about the GeForce3 graphics card, and that's pretty much been sorted... it's now available as an upgrade, and I'm just waiting for you to get some stock in.

But now I have some questions about the hard drives installed in the P4 1.7GHz MAXX machines...

1. What hard drive do they come with? The latest club mag says 40Gb U-DMA 100, but the only 40Gb drive listed in the mag is a Fujitsu U-DMA 66 at 5400rpm - not really U-DMA 100.

2. When ordering and selecting the various upgrades, it lists an "Additional 40Gb hard drive". I assume this is the same as the standard fitted drive, but clicking on "View Details" shows the 40Gb Fuji drive mentioned above, but lists it as U-DMA 100, with a 66.6Mb/sec transfer rate and a speed of 5400rpm - as I said above, not really a U-DMA 100!

I don't see the point in crippling such a fast machine by fitting such slow drives! I'd rather drop the standard installed drive and go for the true U-DMA 100 IBM DeskStar 75Gb with a transfer rate of 100Mb/sec and a speed of 7200rpm.

Unfortunately, this is not an upgrade option! As Penelope Pitstop might say... HAAYUUUUULP!

The drive fitted as standard is the same as the option available. But, there's a mistake in the product description for this drive (GG9675). They *are* actually U-DMA 100 drives, but it mistakenly says 66Mb/sec. This'll be corrected as soon as possible.

Well, the only advantage 7200 rpm gives you over 5400 rpm is an reduction in rotational latency and therefore an improvement in seek time. Both drives can read data at the same speed, but the faster spin just gives you quicker seek times - beneficial if you need to read/write lots of small files quickly, but no big advantage if you're processing huge files. But still, it's nice to have an edge...

Well, I checked with our buyers and our PC production department and they say it's no problem to have an option for fitting those IBM drives instead, so you might just see that option appearing very soon! :-)

Wookiee, try posting this message in the customer feedback forum too.

There's some staff member that goes by the name 'Customer Service' that tries to deal with such questions.

I think Tony and Ali are rather busy at the moment.

It may be, I took a look at the site and no details are given of the drive, this is strange, I would think!!

Yup. I've read the info on tomshardware.com.

Still want an Intel though.

Whatever I buy will be out of date in a few months anyway, so I'll just have to live with it. I was going to wait for the 2GHz, but that's not sue until late this year, and I don't want to wait that long!

It'll still be blindingly fast compared to my current MAXX P3 500 though, so I'm not too fussed.

Just as an aside...

In another thread, I was awarded an extra Filmaday prize for some comments/suggestions on the MAXX ordering process.

One of the points I made was that you should be able to downgrade/remove certain components in order to replace them with others. My disk drive dilemma is just one such example of why I think it would be a good idea...
