Basically, how do I connect two Laptops for use with my newly acquired Broadband

It may seem obvious but I'm not entirely sure.

It would be helpful if someone took me through the process and I'll write what I want done.

What I want done

Basically, I want to connect a Laptop to Broadband in my room, whilst having one downstairs and the Phone Line connected

Info

Downstairs I have a dual socket which I realise the Laptop and also the phone can be connected to.

My problem is this; how do I connect the Laptop upstairs ? I have a single socket upstairs and I normally just move the Laptop from up to downstairs to use Dial-up 'net, but it isn't possible to keep moving it with Broadband

Can I put a cable from the Laptop to the socket directly or do I need to feed it up from downstairs ?

What do I need to do and what 'equippment' do I need ?

Ok

Thanks for the advice everyone :)

I may invest in this equippment later but it sounds relatively costly and too much like effort ...

Keeping things cheap(ish).

you need a router.

broadband line > router > both laptops.

Now, if one is downstairs and one is upstairs, cabling is going to be veeeeerrry awkward, so you want a wireless router. If your laptops don't already support wireless you'll have to buy some kind of wireless PCMCIA card or something.

Wireless router.

Are your laptops wi-fi? If not you can get a dongle that'll convert them, but could end up being costly. Nice fat chunk of wire up the stairs is your other alternative.
