Not based on proper physics, but it looks real enough, and it's all completely random. Working on making it happen over a 3D plane.
There are loads of 3D tutorials on the web, and I have tons of 3D related ebooks if you want to take it further.
It's along similar lines to my "fire" demo, except there's a small amount of collision detection.
This 3D plane stuff is a bit tricky. Z doesn't even exist, but you can substitute it for scale, as long as the focal point is convincing.
But apart from that, it's good. You could make that into some sort of firework...
