OK, I'm moving in a week. I've sorted NTL, TV Licence isn't a problem and I've filled out an online form to let the council know we are moving in a week.

How do I go about sorting out the water and electricity? Do I just ring them and tell them to start billing us?

And anything else I might need to set up at the new flat?

Anyone who's done this before, your help will be much appriciated.

The banks are not a problem since my statments are sent to my parents address still.

The gas and electricity are not in my name at this house so I can't just transfer them.

My friend has told me my landlord/letting agent should tell me who supplies the flat with gas/electricity/water and we just have to ring them.

It's all sorted.

Ring your current gas/electric/water suppliers and let them know when your moving out and supply them with meter readings, tell them where you are moving to and they will check if they supply to that address too and they will transfer your account over (if the answer is no, the landlord can provide you with those details). As soon as you move into your new address, make a note of the meter readings and give them to your suppliers.

Make sure you let the banks know about change of address so that no statements/new cards are sent to your old address.

It'll cost ya, per surname.

Can't remember the prices off hand though, but you can have mail redirected for up to 2 years if needed.

Check the Royal Mail/Post Office website for prices.

I don't think there are any tennants living there now.

Anyhoo, I think it could be sorted.

Also, you'd know this working for Royal Mail. If I tell them I'm moving, will they direct all my mail from my old address to my new address? How do I do this?

The landlord should tell the utility services for you, but you'd best inform them yourself just to be sure.

On the day you move in, take meter readings and give them to the companies (ask the current tenants who the suppliers are), that way you won't be billed for energy/water you can't have used.

Also, get a forwarding address from the current tenants, for their mail. if the refuse to give you one, just call your sorting office and ask them to kill of or RTS (Return To Sender) their mail as they no longer live there.

Yeah - the last time we moved house, the people there plain refused to leave.
Then we finally convinced them ... and they wanted some money for it!

How rude some people are.

Are the people living in the flat aware that you're moving in?
It can cause all sorts of trouble otherwise.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
