After a short wait since their last album 'Up', REM have released their second album as a threesome and the mood has changed yet again.

Reveal was always supposed to be a return to form for the group and it shows. Sounding more like Automatic for the People in places and Green in others, Reveal is REMs strongest album in a long while. So what are the songs like?

Well, the first thing you notice when hearing The Lifting, the first song on the album, is that although they are now using a drum machine for most of their work, the old 'laid back' sound is back in fasion and the lyrics are some of their strongest (and strangest) yet.

I've Been High is the second song on the album and is a fantastic little catchy song that contains many of the trademark emotional traits of Automatic, while giving the listener something to ponder. All the Way to Reno changes the mood slightly by being a more upbeat number, but it still has underlying moods of uncertainty.

Other highlights of the album include Disappear, which sounds like early REM from the Document album, Saturn Returns is something slightly different, from the tuning up at the beginning to the chorus, it gives off a feeling of strangeness and wouldn't seem out of place in a David Lynch movie. Imitation of Life is the current single and is probably the most 'commercial' song on the album, being slightly more upbeat than the rest, like something from Out of Time.

Summer Turns to High can only be described as The Beachboys on slow and warped, in an REM style of course, you'll understand what I mean if you hear it. I'll Take the Rain is probably one of my favorite on the album, being reflective and containing such lyrics as "I used to think, as birds take wing, they sing through life, so why can't we?" Classic REM.

Put together, this album is like a history of REM's earlier work, before the anger of Monster and it oozes their charm and magic without being overly commercial. REM are one of the bands who haven't let fame effect their music and have always performed the stuff they feel comfortable with, Reveal, although not an Automatic beater, is one of their best works of recent years and you'll be listening to it for years to come.
