Everyone I take it.
They are you could say the added extra of buying an album. They are perfect for looking at when you are listening to your latest albums and seeing the pictures, thanks to... and the lyrics. They come in handy when you don't have a clue what the lyrics are.... well there are the basics.
I just deceided to say this because I have noticed there is much more to sleeves than this... it is another sly way for the band to get accross other points and such.
If anyone has Ok Computer look at the sleeve it is full of hidden quotes and pictures.
If you look closly there are pictures of weird stuff
1) Woman pasting wallpaper
2) sandwhich
3) Lyrics of songs that they have done before
4) Hidden messgaes about nuclear war
5) Where the lyrics are, in the spaces there are pictures of things to do with the songs.
and more....
so there you go sleeves great things... always look closer at them next time and I have noticed a trend in the way the better the album the more effort has been but in the sleeve.
Also it means MP3's won't take over the music world as people like having an item in there hand and the sleeve to look at :D
(sorry I read over that there and it is a load of garbage but hey who care?)
Some of my favourite albums have very unatractive colours!
Holy Bible by Manics
and more just can't think!
I actually don't really care much about what you get given in terms of inlays. Lyrics should be banned just so that people can't sit there singing along.
I don't think there is a need for much information on CD's to be honest. Check out Dark side of the moon. Not even the tracks were listed on the outside and inside was just some arty photo work.
Never judge a CD by its cover!
Yes had brilliant sleeve designs, so much of the pyschodelic era had amazing designs.
Compare that to...er..A1 or Steps.
*shivers*
So yeah, sleeves are cool but vinyl was/is better.
I was not really around when CD's were not around and it was just LP's.
I was looking at some of my dads and I will agree vinly was really cool, much bigger and more detail in them.
My dad was into 'Yes' and they had some cool pictures and 'Dark side of the moon' was cool too.
yeah they were/are better.
Unfortunately, a lot of bands don't use this potential.
Radiohead use it well, but I think the best example of this is Tool.
Their new album "Lateralus" comes in a see through case, with a clear plastic inlay sleeve that folds on itself to give a picture when put back in the CD case.
An incredible thing to look at.
Aenima was good as well, painting of Bill Hicks, LA disappearing into the bay and loads more.
Unfortunately, I think CDs dont allow for a lot of detail to be included.
It's an old argument but you can't beat vinyl for sleeve creativity.
Having inherited a load of vinyl from parents etc, you can put so much more there, in larger scope and not end up with the dog-eared inlay sleeves that are CDs today.
I'm not sure if I like lyrics being reprinted inside, a lot of times I prefer to draw my own conclusions as to what a song might be about.
Again, Tool is a perfect example.
Lyrics are left out to make you think for yourself.
Kid A didnt have lyrics but then who needs to read
"yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon"?
