Just who is Miyamoto? I have heard his name thrown about loads of times but can never be bothered to find out who he is. Also why do people use the word san after every Japanese name that is related to gaming e.g. Kutaragi-san.

Because it is the polite way to address somebody in Japanese.
Much like "mr" or "sir".

Shigeru Miyamoto: Made Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid (I think), and many more.
Yugi Naka: My fav! Made Sonic and "NiGHTS"- a little known Saturn game that was absolutely revolutionary.
Yu Suzuki: "The hardware master": Made Daytona, Virtua Fighter (these were 2 of the original 3d games). Recent games have been F355, Shenmue and a whole host of AM2 games. (Can someone remind me what AM2 is now called... or is it the only division that kept its name?)
Hideo Kojima: Made MGS and MGS2- on of the true new generation games makers.
There are many more... but these are the ones most talked about.
And as someone rightly said "Suzuki-san" just means "Mr. Suzuki"
