Telewest Announces Collaboration With Sony Computer Entertainment Europe To Bring Broadband To Playstation 2

Telewest, the broadband communications group, and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) have announced an agreement to combine Telewest's broadband network with Sony's Playstation2. Together they will be trialling Europe's first broadband connection with a computer entertainment system.
The collaboration will enable consumers potentially to sample a very broad range of services, from games and playable level downloads, to applications such as lifestyle and gaming editorial content. All forms of on-line game activity will be explored including pay per play and high quality multi-player on-line gaming.
Technical trials should commence by the end of the year.
Chris Deering, President of SCEE, commenting on the agreement said:
"Telewest is an excellent partner to help us move forward with our Broadband network strategy; they have the motivation, the expertise and the infrastructure to quickly develop tangible applications with real commercial potential. We are very excited about what this agreement will offer to our consumers."
David Docherty, managing director, broadband content, added:
"We are impressed with Playstation's top quality content and technical capability. Interactive gaming is an important area under development for Telewest, and working with SCEE demonstrates our commitment to maximising the revenue potential of our broadband network. Both sides bring cutting edge expertise to the project, and this will provide an excellent platform for us to develop it further."

How much is each side investing in this?
SCEE and Telewest are sharing the cost of development. It is not a materially sensitive amount, but we feel this announcement is significant because games is one of the catalysts for driving broadband uptake. We are excited to be working with SCEE at the forefront of games technology.
Will this make any money? What are the projected revenues? When are these expected?
At this point in time, as it is in the trial stage, there will be no revenue, but it will generate revenue when it is launched as a commercial product. We have done substantial market research and believe there will be good demand.
Is there a realistically large customer base who will be be prepared to pay for this product to justify developing it? (This is a niche market)
We have done substantial market research and believe there will be good demand. Games will be a key driver in broadband uptake, and will increase demand for broadband access.
Is this a substitute for the interactive games on Telewest's interactive platform?
Not at all. This is simply another way our customers can utilise the cable modem which is fitted in the back of the set top box.
How does this affect Telewest's relationship with Microsoft?
Microsoft continue to be a substantial shareholder and supporter of Telewest's broadband strategy.
Why aren't you doing this with x box first?
We are working with Sony because they are first to the market and the market leader in games consoles. Telewest works at the cutting edge of games development, and this will be a world first. As and when Microsoft's product is launched and ready for broadband access, we would like to work with them as well.
Is this an exclusive agreement? Do you anticipate using any technology developed with SCEE to provide broadband access to other console providers?
No it is not exclusive. Telewest's broadband network is technologically advanced, and we welcome any opportunity to progress the roll-out of broadband to our customers.
