Qualifying: The World Champion on the prowl with pole position
Race: Montoya handles the pressure, just about

It was horrible conditions for qualifying with rain pounding on the track and the sky darkened with heavy, thick black clouds. Baumgartner, the World Champion, was the one that tip-toed his way round the track the fastest to take pole position, his 3rd in his career.

In previous SR F1 Championships, no driver has really dominated the Championship from start to finish, but Pizzonia is trying his best to do that after taking the front row slot alongside Baumgartner in 2nd. Pizzonia's main challenger at the moment, Montoya, isn't letting him get away as he takes 3rd on the grid to set up a tremendous battle for the race.

Raikkonen has been there or thereabouts at most of the races this season and is in another great position with 4th. Heidfeld has almost always put up a late charge for the title and not done enough at the start of the season to win it. He'll start 5th, hoping to do more consistently over this 19 race season. Barrichello continues the recent Renault dominance with 6th, Fisichella is showing amazing consistency and could also be a contender for the title. He'll start 7th and De La Rosa rounds out the top 8.

14th Sato (Poopots) 1m25.755s (+0.261s)
15th Verstappen (Jae) 1m25.757s (+0.263s)
16th Karthikeyan (Ortega) 1m25.792s (+0.298s)
17th Button (Der Nazi) 1m25.797s (+0.303s)
18th Salo (Biggie Little) 1m25.824s (+0.330s)
19th Panis (Foreman) 1m25.836s (+0.342s)
20th Pantano (Chris) 1m25.846s (+0.352s)
21st Villeneuve (Mike Swade) 1m25.950s (+0.456s)
22nd M Schumacher (Vampyr) 1m26.141s (+0.647s)

It's amazing what a difference a day makes, as race day was bone dry without a cloud in the sky. With it being about 1m10s a lap, the 71 lap race will be quick.

It was a poor start off the line for Baumgartner, as he got overtaken by Pizzonia, Raikkonen and Montoya, who flew off the line and took the lead. Montoya was pulling away slowly while Raikkonen was just starting to edge closer to Pizzonia.

Transmissions were getting a hammering out there as Villeneuve retired with one on lap 5, ending a miserable weekend for him. No sooner had Villeneuve been pushed to safety, Barrichello's engine let go in a burst of flames on lap 6. Barrichello is the one picking up the unreliability at the moment. It could have been him near the top of the drivers Championship.

More transmission failures later on in the race, as Panis went out on lap 12 and Baumgartner will obviously be distraught with his failure to finish on lap 25, with a possible victory in sight. There was a big crash on lap 31 when Firman spun and ended up facing the wrong way on the track, leading to Karthikeyan being unable to avoid an impact and both retired.

It was around this time, near the one and only stop for most drivers, that Montoya made a slight error and put himself under a bit of pressure, as Pizzonia and Raikkonen were now right behind them. Montoya held on but Raikkonen managed to find a way past Pizzonia and try to hunt down the leader.

Everyone had been in the pits now after lap 40 and battles were raging throughout the field with cars being forced off the track and many drivers losing time and places in a bid to get in the points, which was a possibility with so many cars out.

Raikkonen was closing on Montoya and could have set up a great battle towards the end but we were denied that when Raikkonen's car developed a water leak and retirement on lap 44. This retirement did open the way for teammate Alonso to begin a challenge on Pizzonia and set his Championship challenge underway.

The race got dramatic once again when on lap 61, Montoya ran off the track again, allowing Pizzonia an opportunity to overtake. He couldn't do it and Alonso couldn't find a way past Pizzonia so Montoya came across the line to win the Austrian Grand Prix, his 5th career win and the 2nd of the season. The only disappointment for Montoya was Pizzonia taking 2nd place and limiting the damage.

Alonso gets off the mark for the season with 3rd place and Fisichella's consistency continues with 4th place, although he loses ground on the leaders. De La Rosa did a solid job and threatened Fisichella but couldn't get past and took 5th. Ralf Schumacher had a quiet race and finished on his own in 6th. Sato completes a good day for Williams with 7th and Pantano kept his nose clean to come through the field to take the last point for 8th.
