Right, I was given a piece of RAM, but without putting it in my PC, is there any way of identifying it?

If it doesn't have a label on it then all you'll be able to tell is if it is SD-RAM or DDR-RAM or EDO-RAM or any other bizarre type. Read the codes of the IC's themselves and google them.
