With the magics of DVD, we have totally forgoten many peoples favorite past times, books, reading, yes you name it, sitting down geting a book out and read.

So what are the advantages of books over dvds/tv/etc?
- Well many people would argue it gets you activly interested, not just vegetating in front of the imfamous TV being given absolutly propaganda from the government (or whatever)

- Increasive use of vocabulary, you can learn many new words while TV tends to use more colliqual discussion and also simple basic language, so you dont really learn much.

- Portable, you can take them anywhere, anywhere without the requirement of a battery / power supply

- Increases the imagination, you can activly imagine what they are like with powerful discription

- Better conformt for parents, they know if their child is reading a book, they know exactly what they're doing and are limited to that, and also are concentrating on the STORY at hand, not with a dvd "ooh look at those pritty colours" which is not what the author intentionally tried to convay.

- Better discussion of books, you can discuss the whole book in more depth than a simple dvd

There are plently examples of books being used by serious actors for example:
If you ever watched Star Trek The Next Generation, the Captain of the Enterprise always found time to read a good hardback book with a cup of Earl Grey in the 24th century.

However there must be advantages from DVDs over books?

- The rationale by the director of the play is always a good thing for your own creativeness.

- DVDs can be watched again and have some things which you do notice again

- Are action packed, and have better special effects, for those who are lazy and cant imaginate.

- Always have additional features to try and get you more involved.

But surly due to this books are far better? Portable, no more "wait for this scene to end" and usually with a book a thinking point is left at the end, while with DVDs its usually finished over or a sequal will be made, but that will end be finished over!

We must save the youth! Introduce them to books!

Variety is the spice of life! Too much of one thing deprives you of the others.....so in effect, you lose out.

I read books, watch DVDs, watch video, make video, watch TV, play computer games, and even....go outside and enjoy the outdoors from time to time!!!! :oD

It is a shame when you see pasty faced kids (and increasingly, adults) that seem to spend their entire lives worshipping the one-eyed god.

I'd disagree that dvd's can be watched again as an advantage over books - the dvd is always the same, reading a book again, its always different as your imagination interprets it differently - surely and advantage of books over dvds?

Coming to the point, I'd say they are complementary. One fulfils one need, whilst the other fulfils another. Thats my two-pennyworth anyway.

I have to agree. Its sad seeing so many people who haven't read a book. I know one persons who has never ever read one. The good things about books are you can sit down and read and enjoy a story while increasing your vocabulary.

The imagination has a great way of interpreting words and because it's in your head you can picture everything happening and make the special effects in your head. DVDs and films and televsion are still good but nothing can beat a good book. More people should read.
