Race Headline: The chase is on, Red Bull energized by Webber win
It was hot and sunny for qualifying as Barrichello continues Renault's seemingly relentless grip of the business end of the grid by taking his 4th career pole position, ahead of Salo and rookie Klien.
World Champion Baumgartner is quickly becoming dangerous again after scoring points in San Marino and starts 4th here in Spain. Firman, a former World Champion, is 5th with his teammate, Fisichella, in 8th. Button has qualified in the top 8 in every race so far and he'll start 6th, just ahead of Webber in 7th.

Before the race even began, we knew that the grid wasn't going to mean a great deal, as the heavens opened and rain came down. Everyone will have to concentrate hard for the 65 laps of one of the most technically demanding tracks on the calendar.
Salo got the jump on Barrichello off the grid and took an early lead. Karthikeyan spun on the first lap, as did Button from a promising 3rd place, which released Klien. Firman ran off the track on lap 4. Klien found a way past a slow Barrichello and attacked Salo to take the lead on lap 6. Verstappen was the first retirement on lap 6 when his right front suspension broke.
Klien couldn't pull away from Salo, resulting in Salo retaking the lead on lap 7. Klien wasn't giving up and battled back to take the lead back on lap 8. Montoya was pushed off the track by Pantano on lap 9, while Pantano was trying to pass.
Panis and Sato were fighting hard and Panis looked like he was alongside when Sato pulled across and both ended up spinning on lap 11. Fisichella made a mistake, also on lap 11, by running off the track.
Klien was not as quick as he was at the early stages and Salo's consistent pace dragged Klien back to him and Salo took the lead on lap 13. The leader of the World Championship, Pizzonia, then made an error and went off on lap 17.
Barrichello looked a little quicker now and Klien started to drop back, losing places to Barrichello and Webber. Barrichello was a bit too early with his pit stop and dropped back to Button in the midfield. Barrichello and Button now scrapping for position, they collide and spin on lap 21. Barrichello then made any chance of recovery even more difficult by spinning on the next lap.
The chase was on again for the lead as Salo had a slender lead, ahead of Webber and Klien. The pressure was beginning to tell on Salo and he ran off the track on lap 28, handing the lead to Webber and letting Klien through for 2nd. Salo's pace was impressive in his recovery and retook the lead on lap 30.
Villeneuve, a two time winner in Spain, was having a difficult time and he spun on lap 30. Ralf Schumacher went off on lap 31 and Raikkonen spun trying to take Pantano on lap 35. Pantano went on to spin on lap 37. Sato spun on lap 43.
It was then a bitter blow for Salo and MG F1 as a left front puncture forced him to retire on lap 44 from a commanding 10 second lead. This handed the lead to Klien. Michael Schumacher spun on lap 46 and dropped out of the points. Klien then showed some inexperience by pushing too hard in the closing staes and running off the track on lap 58, giving the lead to Webber.
Pizzonia was coming through all this and actually found himself in 4th place and the possibility of extending his lead in the Championship. However, his car conspired against him and his engine developed problems which resulted in retirement on lap 61.
Webber was being hunted down but managed to fend off his pursuers and win the Spanish Grand Prix, his 3rd career win, his first win since 2002 and it ends B.A.R's 3 year domination in Spain. Baumgartner looked fast in the closing stages and benefitted from Klien's error to take 2nd and the World Champion now looks dangerous again. Klien may have made a costly error but he gets his first podium finish with 3rd place.
Montoya cuts the gap to Pizzonia with 4th place. Firman was under big pressure in the closing stages but came through to take 5th, closely followed by De La Rosa in 6th and Heidfeld in 7th. Karthikeyan scores his first ever point with 8th.

Good stuff.
