Listening to Tool's new one "lateralus".

I can say that I haven't heard such a brave, fearless and intelligent album since their last one.
But Lateralus carries this one and evolves.

Their previous two "Undertow" and "Aenima" have been studies in shame, guilt, paranoia, rage, abandonment, pyschosis and murderous intent.
Deeply personal and cathartic albums, stunning and they blow most other "rock" bands clean out of the water.

Lateralus is something else.
Where as Undertow dealth with issues of child-abuse, suspicion of loved ones, feelings of hatred, self loathing and fear - Aenima took that and made those issues wider.

There were songs about evolving to a higher level of consiousness (46&2), learning to accept a child as maybe not a creature of fear and spite...still pretty serious and personal fears abound on Aenima.

Lateralus however, leaves all of that behind.
These are songs about pleading for forgiveness for acting dumb before, songs of regret and hope, songs that try to make you understand that we do not inhabit bodies because we are alive, these are merely temporary transpot for your soul.

So many ideas and thoughts.
Lateralus is one of the bravest and honest "rock" albms out there.

I haven't heard the new one but i have the Aenima, Undertow and Opiate albums... title song 'Aenima' is a good one to download.. or 'Stinkfist' or 'Prison Sex'.... is the lateralus album in the Aenima style or have they moved on? I heard a bit of a track in hmv the other day, sounded similar, very bass and drums driven (i say it in that order to avoid confusion with that repetitive drum n basss 'bangin choons 2 the maximum 9t9 pillin' nation double hard b******' rubbish...) hmm... i sense an outcry at that one...

I've heard many good things about Tool, but haven't as yet heard any of their stuff.

Maybe I'll go and find something of theirs to listen to after reading this....

Top album, and no mistake. Easily the best thing I've heard released so far this year (mind you, 2001 has been pretty weak for great albums so far). All great stuff, but 'Reflection' in particular is an awesome piece of music. And what a cool album cover as well! It's nice to see some thought going back into music again (it's ironic that there's a Britney Spears banner at the top of the page).
