Anyone playing this at the moment?

It's not out in the UK yet (not sure if there's any official date confirmed for it yet or not), but I've been having a bash at the US version for about a week a so now and it's great stuff.

For those who haven't heard about what City of Heroes is, it's a mass multiplayer online action game set in a fictional super hero backdrop. The first thing you have to do after staring up the game is to design your super hero. There are a few different types of hero to choose from; a blaster hero who specialises in long-range attacks, scrappers are close-range, tankers are hulking close-range beefcakes, defenders are healing heroes and controllers can use mind powers. After selecting your initial style of hero you then choose his/her main powers from a series of power pools, then after knowing what powers you have, you design the look of your hero!

Designing the look of your hero is really fun; there are thousands of combinations available, and when you're online you'll hardly ever see similar looking heroes. My hero is a martial arts specialist called Kung Pu (I tried naming him Spruce Lee but that name was already taken). He's a white haired martial arts master who has funky white tracksuit trousers with a purple flash effect down the side, big metal hands and shoulder pads, bulging purple veins all over his beefy chest, purple sunglasses, and to top it all off, he smokes a big fat Cuban cigar (and he lurks in the Guardian server).

After designing the look of your character and playing through the training mission, you can hit the streets and fight crime alongside loads of other players (it's all co-operative play between players, so you don't constantly get your butt kicked by nerdy gamers as in other games).
The game map is divided into city sections, and in those different sections you acquire various contacts who'll set you various different missions. Missions can consist of beating up a certain number of a certain type of enemy, making contact with another NPC or indoor missions beating up baddies, bosses and getting evidence.

One of the best features of this game is the ability to team up with other heroes. Teaming up allows you to do any one of your group's missions, or just go around beating up baddies for the sake of it. You can also participate in special task-force missions in a team, and even form supergroups (which I guess is the equivalent to clans).

In RPG style, after beating up baddies and completing missions you gain money and experience points, money can be spent of items which improve your powers, and levelling up allows you to gain further powers and slots for increasing the effectiveness of said powers. When you die in the game, you can be transported to the nearest hospital with a slight XP debt and get back out onto the streets again with little fuss.

City of Heroes is a fairly simple game with a simple structure, but that's why it's so good; it's uncomplictaed fun. Teaming up with other players, helping other players out and getting helped yourself creates a great spirit amongst players, and there are plenty of friendly players online.

You can buy the game download direct from the maker's website http://www.plaync.com/ for that you get the game along with a months free game time. Top stuff.

What did you expect? To fall in straight away? MMORPGs require a great deal of patients, which is what I gave Galaxies, waiting for when it turned from a slightly monotonous, skill grinding bore fest to the Online Star Wars game I was promised. It never happened, my interest faded and I haven't been back for months.

I bought starwars galaxies once, for like £35, when it first came out, I played it for less than 2 days, and returned the game. It is quite a dull game, I found myself walking for hours to get to a quest place, only to be killed instantly <_<

I like the idea of a pick up and play MMORPG, I got bored of playing Star Wars Galaxies because I found myself stuck in a long, dull routine of grinding away experience points to reach the next level. I just wanted to get on exploring the game, but was held back by my lower, crappy skills.

City of Hero's does look very enjoyable though, and I'll have to see about getting it some time though not until I've decided when I'll be getting World of Warcraft.

An expansion is on the way too, introducing Player Vs Player combat, and allowing people to become Super Villains.

It is quite a simple pick up and play game which may not be to some PC gamer's tastes, but it does allow pretty much any gamer with any skill to play it online and enjoy it. I mean, I've never played any kind of MMORPG in my life, and whenever I venture into most online FPS I get my butt kicked, but I'm really enjoying City of Heroes.

I suppose the simple nature of the game could lead to some people getting bored with it due to the lack of complexity, but there's plenty of new content added to the game, like the ability to now get a cape for your hero or the special Halloween themed stuff a week back. Besides, there are plenty of missions to do as well, either by yourself, in a team, special task force missions and many new plot threads coming, so I guess the amount of missions to do is endless over time.

Its too big a hastle to impost it from us, Also, i think it looks a bit cheesey.
I prefer FFXI, I will try coh sometime, see if it is any good, a free trial would be a cool idea for new players to see what the game looks like.

I think a European release is fairly imminent. PCGamer had a new review of the game, plus the mag had a few ads which seemed to suggest it was on it's way to our shores.

I was going to import this one, but just didn't have the time. From the same developers as Guild Wars which I was impressed with when I had a go of the free weekend thing. I've heard it's more a pick up and play game than the endless grinding associated with many MMORPG's, which is a good thing as far as these games go as it'll avoid repetition.

I'll keep an eye on it and see if there's an official UK release. Aside from World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, this is one of the few MMORPG's I'm looking forward to.
