Popular prostitute guide book ‘Street Map for Men’ has revealed the full extent of Manchester’s sex trade – listing the city’s 113 ‘massage parlours’ and escort services. The high number of parlours in the city has led the book’s author to crown Manchester “UK capital for massage parlours”.

In the new edition of his infamous guide to the sex industry, George McCoy says the city has “one of the most extensive selection of massage parlours” in the country. Although McCoy initially attempts to be discreet about the services provided by these massage parlours, the guide is obviously guiding the reader to prime spots in Britain’s sex industry.

The Guide shows the true extent of Manchester’s adult services, listing 113 establishments with 1077 ladies on their books. Many of the parlours listed are located in student areas of South Manchester, such as Fallowfield, Withington and Chorlton.

McCoy told Student Direct that Manchester is “pretty special” with almost the same number of parlours as London, but over a much smaller space. “There are many more than in other cities of its size, and the only rival on a parlour-per-capita basis is Stoke-on-Trent.”

McCoy has featured Manchester not only in his annual ‘British Massage Parlour Guide’, but the city also has it’s own ‘Street Map for Men’ which is a fold out map showing parlours, with locations, opening times and even marks out of five for the featured establishments. Manchester is the first city to have its own street map for men, highlighting parlours, sex shops, adult cinemas and bookshops.

Written firmly tongue-in-cheek, McCoy’s Guide is a light-hearted guide to a much seedier subject. Although McCoy claims that he had had no personal experience of any masseuses offering sexual services, the photos of nude ladies in the guide and listing services offered such as ‘videos, uniforms, fantasy rooms and pole dancing suites’ tell a different story… McCoy told us that he has to use the euphemisms for legal reasons but these parlours are really offering more than just a back rub.

Looking at South Manchester, McCoy’s insight into the parlours is quite enlightening. In Fallowfield, unknown to some (known very well by others) Pandora’s massage parlour is a ‘long established parlour’. McCoy is particularly impressed by its nocturnal opening hours (6pm-6am) and the high proportion of ladies working there who “seem to be students”. One lady of note was praised for “putting each of her customers in their place before giving them a very enjoyable experience”. However, McCoy did not say whether the establishment catered for the student budget.

Whilst many residents of Fallowfield are unaware of Pandora’s existence, amongst others, the massage parlour has a more notorious appeal, with many students curious about what goes on there. Pandora’s made no official comment, but said that people would have to find out for themselves.

Residents of Withington are also catered for in McCoy’s guide, with five-star Charlotte’s on Wilmslow Road getting the author’s high approval for its ‘versatile’ staff. Chorlton boasts three parlours, with establishments like Strawberries & Cream on Wilbrahim Road which is open 24 hours a day and is equipped with a Jacuzzi and love swing. Just what’s needed for a good relaxing massage.

Whilst McCoy’s guide treats the subject in a very light-handed way, many people are outraged that such a book should be published and made available for purchase. Manchester councillors and church leaders have condemned the guide and the accompanying street map. Councillor Neil Swannick said: “The publication amounts in effect as contacts for prostitutes in the city and it appears to be very badly produced with hand-drawn illustrations”.

However, creator McCoy claims that he is just providing a service and sought only to provide information on an already existing trade. “Manchester is the UK capital for massage parlours. There is a refreshing honesty in Manchester about this, people are more down to earth,” he says.

He told Student Direct that one of the great things about living in Britain was that we are a highly tolerant society: “People are much more tolerant of things like abortion, drugs and even prostitution. Most people recognise that these women have got to make a living somehow, and they are not doing anyone any harm.” He added that all the women he had met whilst researching the guide were working of their own free will.

However student opinion seems to be divided over McCoy’s book and Manchester’s sex capital status. Patrick Doyle, a second year politics student said: “I think it’s appalling that there are books encouraging people to pay for sex. It’s an illegal business, and having books promote it and make it easier to find is just wrong.”

However others saw a funnier side: “It seems like the guide isn’t doing any harm. The parlours are already there, so all the guide is doing is saving the hassle of going somewhere dodgy!”

Manchester’s accolade as ‘massage parlour capital’ is hardly something the tourist board will promote, yet perhaps it reflects the city’s laid-back, tolerant attitudePopular prostitute guide book ‘Street Map for Men’ has revealed the full extent of Manchester’s sex trade – listing the city’s 113 ‘massage parlours’ and escort services.
