I wiull soon have a laptop upsairs. I have a downstairs desktop. I want to network them, so that they can share HDD's and printers etc. what is the easiest/best/cheapest way to do this?

I've done something similar to this - i.e. added my laptop to my network so I could share printers, drives, etc. I gotta warn ya - its painfully slow via a PCMCIA card.

I havent got to the bottom of the reason why - it shouldn't be any slower than the rest of my network. What I'd definitely recommend is that you buy the best performing card you can afford - definitely 100BaseT, 10BaseT is not even worth considering.

PCMIA or summat network card, and some crossover cables should do you nicely. Well, I say some crossover cables, I mean an awful lot of cross over cable extensions.
