Why not?
Only the older models force you to encode/convert to ATRAC3. The newer HD3 and HD5 models allow you to use MP3.
Still, I know a lot of people hate the PC software, but it isn't that bad :)

Same thing here.
Although it's no way near as bad as the iPod battery problem where they all died out of their warranty! I'd rather this small problem than find the battery is useless in a years time!
Still, my iPod does the job fine.

That's my useful contribution of the day.
Zen Micros are good, but are know to be faulty.
Try the Sony HDW series (with 30hours battery life), the iRiver series or even the Creative ZEN series (although the standard ZENs are bulky as fook, only the Micros are lookers).
I certainly wouldn't buy an iPod again - but that's not saying they're crap pieces of kit, because they're not.
