Buy an IPOD. Where would you advise I go or start looking?

Why not?

Only the older models force you to encode/convert to ATRAC3. The newer HD3 and HD5 models allow you to use MP3.

Still, I know a lot of people hate the PC software, but it isn't that bad :)

I have a 5gb Rio Carbon. I love it. It's stylish, does the job and is a cheap alternative to the Ipod. I found that all my friends have Ipods or mini Ipods so I bought this and it rocks. If you want something different that still does a good job go for the Riooooo.

Like Bullet said, I love my iPod but you can buy cheaper.

Don't touch Sony.

Same thing here.

Although it's no way near as bad as the iPod battery problem where they all died out of their warranty! I'd rather this small problem than find the battery is useless in a years time!

If I was buying one now I'd probably look at other companies.

Still, my iPod does the job fine.

Apple Store, direct online. As a student you'll get it cheaper too.

Micro's are absoloutely superb, but there is a common fault, which mine has. The headphone jack gets loose, and your sound quality goes all over the place. Need to send mine back. Aside from that, I've squeezed 90 odd CDs on to it, with another 1.2gb of space.

As much as I like my iPod, you can get better for your money.

Zen Micros are good, but are know to be faulty.

Try the Sony HDW series (with 30hours battery life), the iRiver series or even the Creative ZEN series (although the standard ZENs are bulky as fook, only the Micros are lookers).

I certainly wouldn't buy an iPod again - but that's not saying they're crap pieces of kit, because they're not.
