Once upon a time there was a beautiful little Princess called Alana, who lived in a beautiful little castle in the hills of a country called Ebony. Now this little girl was normally very good. She ate her vegetables, brushed her teeth and even helped wash up, but there was one thing she never, ever wanted to do and that was to go to bed.

The King and Queen just couldn’t get her to go to bed, no matter what they tried. They made her milky drinks, read her books and even sang her lullabies, but her eyes stayed open and she refused to go to sleep.

One night, when she was particularly wide awake and playing with her toys, she heard a tap-tap-tap on the window. She got up and opened the window and peered into the night. Well, imagine her surprise when she came face to face with an owl, and not just any owl, but a great big silver owl.

“T-wooh.” Said the owl. “I was flying past your castle and I saw your light on. Isn’t it a bit late for a little princess like you to be up?”

“I don’t want to go to sleep.” Replied the princess.

“But aren’t you bored on your own?” asked the Owl.

“Well, I am a little bored. Everyone else wants to go to sleep.” Said the Princess.

“Come with me then. You can see how we owls live while everyone else is asleep.”

So the owl took the princess out of the window and up into the sky. She gasped as stars swam past her and lights twinkled in the sleepy town below.

“What do you do at night?” asked the Princess.

“We sing to the moon to keep her awake” hooted the owl as they landed in a tree.

So the Princess and the owl sang to the moon. But the princess began to get bored and the tree was scratching her.

“Can I go home now? It’s cold and I’m bored of singing.”

So the owl took her back home.

The next evening, the Princess wanted to stay up again. She heard the same tap tapping at the window and went to let the owl back in.

“What are you going to do tonight?” She asked him.

“Tonight we are going to collect sticks for our nests.” explained the owl.

So the owl took the princess to a wood. There were already many owls there of many different sizes and all of them had pieces of wood in their beaks.

“Please help me to collect these twigs so that I can build a nest.” said the owl, pointing at the twigs on the ground.

The princess began to pick up the sticks, but she soon found the job very tiring and sat down for a rest.

“You can’t sit down now,” said the owl, “we need to collect lots of sticks.”

The Princess slowly got up and carried on collecting sticks until she couldn’t collect any more.

“Please can I go home now? I’m bored of collecting twigs and very tired.” She said.

So the owl took the princess back to her room. She was so tired that she went straight to bed. She slept all through breakfast and lunch too.

When she finally awoke, all that she had left to eat were the cold remains of her dinner. The King and Queen told her that this was what happened when little princesses didn’t get their sleep, but by the time the sun went down and the bright moon appeared, she wanted to stay up.

It wasn’t long after the King and Queen had gone to bed that the Princess heard the same tap tap on the window. It was the silver owl again.

“Hello Princess.” He said. “Would you like to come with me again tonight?”

“I’m very hungry.” Said the princess.

“Then I’ll take you to an Owl dinner party.” said the Owl as they flew out of the window.

They landed in a forest and the princess found herself sitting at a large table with lots of hungry looking owls.

“So what are we having to eat?” She asked.

The owl placed a plate in front of her and she looked down.

“Mice? Yuck! I’m not eating mice! I want to go home.” She cried.

The owl took the princess home again and she suddenly felt very tired.

The next morning the princess woke up in time for breakfast. She was very hungry and rushed downstairs. She ate all her breakfast so fast and then ate all of her lunch, even the vegetables.

That evening, to the surprise of the king and queen, the princess went straight to bed.

As the Queen tucked her in, she asked the princess why she wanted to go to bed.

“I don’t want to sing to the moon, collect sticks or eat mice ever again. From now on, I will go to bed every night.”

And do you know what? She did.
