[GAME] Brutal Legend – Xbox 360

Like so many actors, Jack Black has jumped on the video games industry to voice Eddie the Roadie. Not this year’s biggest release but then this game should not be under estimated, what appears to be a heavy metal game with some demons thrown in, actually has some great comedy, pretty nice graphics and an enjoyable story!

Like many people, i played the demo and found it to be entertaining, not really too sure if it would be my kind of game. I am not a Metal fan but i do very much enjoy Jack Black. So based on all this i took a gamble, looking for a fun game to play and keep me entertained. My expectations were not that high but after a weekend of playing the game, i have to say that this game is really good!

The game starts in modern day, where Eddie, who is voices by Jack Black and looks almost the same, is a roadie for a big metal band. His job is to fix things, build things and protect the band. The comedy comes straight from the start. One liners delivered as you would see in all his films, but with some heavy swearing and gore to take up a notch further. He is crushed by a large statue while saving a band member and then is mysteriously teleported to another world, or time. Where he is attacked by weird demons and has to defend himself with an axe he finds and a guitar which shoots electric. It is all very far-fetched stuff but this adds to the comedy and has to be seen to be appreciated. So once the demons are slain you find a nice young lady who wants to help you. You are taken to Bladehenge where you learn humans are enslaved and the world is in chaos. So you decide to stay around, kick some butt and save mankind. While it is a very light hearted game, the story is actually pretty deep in places with some big twists that are well worth waiting for! So the story follows on with Eddie helping out and teaching them the ways of Metal and being a roadie.

The actual gameplay is a bit of a mix, there are some missions which see you running up mountains and taking out enemy demons or other creatures to continue the story. But the main aspect of the battles come from the various groups of people in the world. You are called Ironheade (with an e so they know you mean business!) and you build a stage to defend, gather fans to spend on creating allies to help defend and attack your opponent. It is a bit like an action / stratergy game i suppose. It is a rather unfamiliar concept but it works really well. You command the units but can fight alongside them. The winner is the one who destroys the stage of their opponent. These battles act more like the boss fights i guess, with adventure quests / missions between to move the story along.

It may all seem a bit weird and in a world of Metal, what more would you expect! It does come together really well and creates a game which keeps you interested due to the variation in gameplay. It is refreshing to see a game with different aspects that works this well. Along with all the battles and stratergy side, you also level up Eddie to fight in the other missions, and upgrade your car to make it more deadly! ( Mr. Ozzie Osbourne is at hand to help you upgrade your stats! A very nice little cameo) So this game really offers something very different. A nice plot, comedy, variation in game play and online multiplayer. So it seems Brutal Legend has it all really.

Well yes an no – the game is great and i have not found myself bored at any point. I just stopped playing to eat, sleep, watch football or go out. It is addictive, but it is very short. The main story will be about 5 hours long i would say. With side missions to bulk it up a bit. This is not a terrible thing as it keeps everything fresh and exciting. If the game was 10 hours you would probably be bored by the end and not finish it. The multiplayer is set as the stage battles i mentioned earlier, you against your enemy! Really fun – if you can find a game. It might just be me but i have to wait about 5-10 minutes to get a game. So while it is fun to play online, it seems very hard to actually get a game. A real shame but probably something which will be sorted in an update or in a week or two once the game has been out for a while.

I have to say for a game i was expecting little from, it really has made a big impression on me, and i even enjoy the music that plays in the background. Some classic metal songs and some i have no idea about, but they all add to the game. It is a funny and light hearted game where things seem “stupid” at times but it adds to the games charm and i reall enjoyed it.

Has to get a 8/10 for me. Probably would have been more if the multiplayer was working for me!
