Ok enough of my blatant snobbery and prejudice against Rockport and more about the actual place. Dr Livvy’s interior is gorgeous and would be described as more minimalist than anything else. The bar is filled with dark furnishings, a beautiful wooden floor and large wooden booths, along with regular tables and chairs, offering comfortable yet stylish seating. The place is absolutely huge, making it perfect for those looking for a party venue, but also has a massive heavy curtain which can be used to partition part of the bar off, preventing, on quiet nights, the vastness from becoming daunting.
My friend and I went to Dr Livvy’s to review its Argentinean night. Dr Livvy’s has a different music policy every night and on Thursdays the venue is taken over by Tango giving the likes of me the perfect opportunity to make a complete t it of myself. Beginners’ lessons are held at around eight pm, and if my experience was anything to go by, will be much needed for all those who have never attempted the Tango before. After getting over the embarrassment that with my heels on (a must, apparently, if you want to get those sweeps right) I was about a foot taller than the tallest male, the lesson was hilarious and enormous fun. The group was of mixed ability and ages yet everyone got on brilliantly and the better dancers were all incredibly patient with their new wards, offering lighthearted instruction without preaching. I thought it would be a bit weird being clutched by a forty-five-year-old man whilst the instructor told us to push into each other chests and “feel the energy”. But call me a perv, I really enjoyed it and I got into it so much that I completely forgot to be embarrassed by the situation. In hindsight, I’m not sure how much the feminist in me loved some strange older man telling me with satisfaction “I have complete control of your body, I can move you where I want you”. But get over it, this is cool, and by the end of the session the same man had even me swooping about like a reincarnated J Lo.
At the moment Dr. Livvy’s bar prices are a little above Fallowfield’s average, but the owners are keen to make this bar student friendly and plan to offer special deals to students in the very near future. There are already, however, a couple of gems that make a drip to Livvy’s very kind on the purse strings. My favourite was the litre of decent house wine for a bargainous £7:50. Beat that Wetherspoons. I was too busy swooning to try the menu but all of us there for the dance class were served with delicious complimentary canapés that have definitely motivated me to go back for a meal in the future. Particularly tempting is the full English breakfast, with bottomless tea or coffee, for a ridiculous £3.50.
Dr Livvy’s is a breath of fresh air from the trauma that is the Arndale and Market Street, making it perfect for weary shoppers or anyone heading for a night at the Printworks. The atmosphere is friendly, the drinks affordable and all Burberry is well and truly left at the door.
