I recieved, this week, the following DVD-RW drive-thing from Speical Reserve (with their damn £2 p&p and all - which actually made for pretty speedy delivery, compared to what it could've been before)

One of the things that caught my eye here was the fact that you get the 'infamous' NERO software included in the £50 package - FOR FREE. But, upon installing it all yesterday, I find I'm not as happy as I'd like to be with this. Apparently, I still need to go on to their website and spend (the equivelent of) $25 for a DVD-Video Plug-In, or something! (Not such a great deal after all, perhaps...)
I tried to get the stuff from a website that offered it all for free (GULP!), but that only seemed to infect my PC with something (which I think has now been deleted) and I now get the occasional pop-up.
...But I still cannot play my DVDs! I can't even copy files straight from the disc in My Computer into My Documents, or whatever.
So...
I'm after some solutions. Some kind help and assistance. Advice on, perhaps, other downloable, reliable (and FREE!) programs I can use to achieve all my needs and a little more.
One of my main priorities with this is to be able to take music from various live DVDs and to be able to convert them into MP3s.
But where do I start?
How can you help me?
What do I need, presuming this NERO stuff is useless without payment?
In advance, I thank you for your suggestions and the time you took to read this. :)
So, what would I need in order to take music files from my live music DVDs to be able to use them as MP3s, as an example, on an MP3 CD.
I know it can be done; but as with most PC stuff, I just don't know how...
