It's simply unbelievable that this scale of whaling is allowed to proceed at all. I don't understand how the Japanese can so blatantly flout international laws under the pretence of conservation research.

I dunno, in theory of course I'd want everything to be nice and dandy and don't want to see animals being pointlessly slaughtered but when so many humans die in the third world or whatever that takes priority... in my head.

Sharks are great, unless you're the unlucky 1 in a few million that gets eaten.

I saw a program on BBC1 that showed thousands of hammerheads swimming together, looked great.

That's awfully big of you.

Orientals catch sharks, slice off the dorsal fin and throw the shark back in the water to die. It's not even a major consituent of sharks-fin soup. All it does is thicken the soup. No contribution to the flavour, they could esaily use artifical substances. But oh no, we need to persue traditional ways. Fine, I'll stab you in the face like they used to do in Dark Ages China. Very traditional. I've actually seen it happen on one of my diving trips. It's not the worst I've seen. Once in the Caribbean, two fisherman dragged up two eagle rays, chopped off their "wings" and left them to die on the beach. The American assistant at the dive shop was so angry when he saw them we actually had to hold him back. Anyone ever seen eagle rays? They're beautiful creatures, and endangered because of scum like that.

Like I said, I get angry.

I was tricked into watching the full version a few years back. It "commands the attention" as I said to Light. It's not the full video track where you see the skinned whatever (don't know what type of animal it is, a "something" dog) actually lift it's head and look directly into the camera. It's heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking. I was pleading for the damn thing to just give up and die. Do a search for fur.mmv for the full version, but be warned, it'll be with you for the remainder of your life.

I've always been anti fur, but this strengthened my conviction in it.

The people doing the skinning aren't to blame IMHO. These people are just making a living and if we were brought up in their environment we'd possibly do the same. It's the people who buy the furs to support this trade that are to blame.

Update the link, Light, if you could, please. I've seen some pretty brutal stuff like that before. I have to really, environmental law is what I want to do with my life.

Edit: Sorry 'bout that, I worked it out. And yeah, it's pretty disgusting. Makes me so angry when I see anything like that. It always has.

With a warning like that, I just had to. And...

OH MY. That is f-ing disgraceful, ney, well, there's no word for it. So after beating it, they proceed to rip off their coating while they're STILL ALIVE. IT ISN'T HUMANE. The human equivalent I guess, of having your entire skin turned inside out.

Then the beaver (I think) gets choked by the gimp with a foothold on his neck. Kill the basts.

Link's wrong by the way. But just as well, acts as a further precaution.

I now have a lovely image of a rhino farm....

Certain aspects of many Oriental cultures are abhorrent to me. Particularly their treatment of animals. Should anyone have a strong enough stomach, watch this;

WARNING: Do NOT watch this if you're easily upset. Hell, even if you're not easily upset, have a think about clicking on it.

I've not had the guts to watch it myself because, as I said to Pandaemonium when he mentioned the link, I have no desire to sit sobbing in my office before being consumed with impotent fury.

Deep down, I don't care enough about whales.

Too many other problems.
Also, I read today that sharks are dying off too.

The population of whales is not stable. Since whaling started, Japanese whalers have been going through sequential overexploitation, meaning they hunt all the blue whales down until they're too rare to find then they move onto the next biggest (sei) and so on.

Meanwhile, the populations they've exploited go into extinction vortexes, with the gene pool getting reduced to stupidly small amounts and inbreeding starts becoming prevalent. Same sort of thing is happening with tigers and African black rhinos. Because stupid Orientals think a sprinkling of rhino horn will go nicely in their tea.

Rhino horns grow back. A poacher could make a lot more money if he just took the horn and let it regrow.

Why would you want to eat pigeons? They carry loads of diseases.

Oh wait...

Most people's annoyance would be down to the hunting of 'rare' animals I think.

Hunting Chav's would be ok though, although we can't hunt pigeons...
