Just wanted to find out for definite, I know he drowned in the Mississipi river, but why? What was he doing there, just going for a casual swim or is there some other reason?

I think it was just the simple fact of big river, little man. The BBC4 documentary on him went in to a bit of detail as I think they'd spoken to the guy who was with him at the time. It still doesn't make much sense though.
