The computer has been around 50+ years and then they were as big as houses nearly, and were used for calculators and trying to investigate space which was a big thing in the 50’s in America as the space race was on against the Russians. These computers were massive and some were as big or bigger than houses. Students mostly used these to play a space game where there is just a spaceship against a spaceship. Paper strips with holes in which the computer read ran this game and the colours only black and white it wasn’t really the best game to play but still fun in itself.

In the 70’s Atari came along with something so original… pong!! This was put into arcades round the whole world, the instructions were simple: insert money, ball will serve automatically and stop ball from hitting edge to get high score. Atari made so much money from this arcade game, as everyone didn’t think about how much money they deposited, just about there high scores and every arcade was lined with Japanese people playing pong. But while the world was playing pong, Japan now had Chinko (don’t know exactly how to spell it) a pinball game type thing that had the millions of Japanese people playing for hours on end and some thing had to be done as people were almost losing sleep over these addictive little games.

But that all changed when the best of em all game along… Space invaders. It was so successful and the most money making of anything they had ever seen, and even released a sound track, which was very catchy but stupid at the same time.
It originated from breakout a game where you shoot the blocks, and was really easy so the inventor wanted a game where the blocks shoot back. The alien enemies were the first animated characters ever made. 6 Months after release in the arcades space invaders, the police restricted the opening hours of them so no one would stay up all night. In 1979 Warner Bros bought Atari for $30 million. After that Atari made endless space game e.g. Asteroids and defender, which was one of my favourite games for the Atari.

Pacman was the next big thing selling $16,000,000 for Namco in one year. Originally it was named puckman but it caused arousing situations if you know what I mean, so they changed it to Pacman. The basic aim of this was to collect these yellow things without getting eaten by the ghosts at the same time. Also there was ms. Pacman too which was the same thing but Pacman has a bow on his head so it was a rip off.

After the Atari was the spectrum, which was the start of home console playing all over the world. Parents bought the computer for studying aids and to revise for important tests, but it was mainly used for gaming instead. As there was a keyboard with this, there was the option to create a game of your own and it worked tremendously well. It was quite hard so magazines gave out codes to make small platform games but they weren’t very good, but there was an element of completing your own game. There were several brilliant games but Manic Miner had to be the most popular. You were a little miner going around avoiding lurking enemies, which was well fun at the time but now you would just throw it over your shoulder.

After the spectrum the whole arcade and console market went down hill, with hundreds of big arcades closing over the world and the making of consoles stopped as well. This was a massive blow and it seemed, as computer games were at an end altogether there was definitely some fear of computers and games never coming back but luckily that didn’t happen.

It wasn’t until 1985 that Miyamoto came along with Nintendo and the smash hit Mario bros that was really popular for the super nes. Also came the creation of Donkey Kong the cool ape hit Nintendo with much force and sold hundreds of thousands of copies. These games were all original, fun, and addictive to play and it gave the market a whole new era for gaming and the consoles.
Then In 1989 came the Gameboy, which was meant for adults and children, with its massive game Tetris. For some reason Russians took to this game very well but still it was another top seller on the new handheld console.

From there the psx ruled the ways for 5 or so years and now here we are with 128 bit graphics, but just to wonder was space invaders better than Zelda?

Graphics are improving and I have seen clips of a game with a new graphics chip and it looks like something out of a video with the colours and texture exactly right. Also now that online gaming is now an option as well I can say that video games will be with us for a extremely long time.

Cheers

Computers have been around for almost 100 years (minus roughly 15)!!!

They were used to crack German codes during the first World War.

Isn't this the same thing you posted a couple of months ago? The day after that eye-candy program, which just happened to have exactly the history that you've just written about down to a tee.

The big clue is the fact that it's in the same order and it doesn't mention one of the most important games manufacturers and console sellers, Sega.

TW - why post this again?
