Sadly due to the number of idiots that find themselves causing trouble in the sport we all love, from all clubs, on many occasions I have found myself being pushed, sworn at, be-littled and treated with a total lack of respect by the police. Often I have feared going to games and being ordered around and treated like one of the hooligans that cause so much trouble.
The sad truth is I don’t see any other real way for the Police to handle things. It can’t be expected for them to be able to differentiate between the normal fan and the hooligan.
At times it has left me wondering whether going to the matches is worth it. Many times have scenes such as being marched like cattle from the rail station to the away teams ground taken the shine off the day and totally dwindled my enthusiasm for the game ahead.
At times I wish the police could just be a little more patient and allow fans not wanting any trouble to get to the game with as little fuss as possible.
Of course, opposing fans cause problems too. Every club has the idiots and it’s these people that give football a bad name.
Again I have had my trouble in this respect also. A few years ago travelling to Ewood Park for a Semi final Second Leg against Blackburn our bus had a brick put through the window. Also, in Bristol this season away at Bristol City, I made the mistake of wearing my Owls scarf coming out of the ground after a 4-1 win only to be grabbed by a City fan, sworn at and asked if I was 'Up for it'.
When I was younger I was totally oblivious to these sorts of problems and the news on TV of hooliganism in football seemed like a distant thing to me. Yet the older and more travelled I become, the reality comes closer.
The theory of if you don’t look for trouble then you wont get it doesn’t always work that way, you only have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and anything can happen.
I still enjoy going to the away games. I just dont like the Yob culture that seems to tag along with it.
Strange going to the game and coming out, seemed like the police really did out number 4000 Wednesdayites which seems a little silly. Totally over the top and once again treated like muck. Got to the station for 6pm thinking it would give me and a friend time for a bite and a pint, but no. Escorted straight to the ground and left to spend an hour and a half in there, having to eat a dirty greasy burger and a nasty pint. Be spending tomorrow on the toilet then.
No really trouble with the Hudders fans. Just wish the opposing fans would try make up some new originals songs. Taunts such as "Your not famous anymore" do get boring, especially coming from teams who are often playing there biggest ever game in there history, against us.
Up the Owls!
"Just seen Hudders destroy Wednesday - jon worthington is the man."
I'm betting Pro Evo isn't too happy right now. But he's so well-travelled, he'll just pick up his knapsack and hitchhike off to the next thrilling Owls match.
> Indeed, only on Sunday did we play Aldershot and there was trouble going to and from the ground.
Aye. Was there a couple of weeks ago and was lambasted, 'Westleys f££king rentboy', the bloke took it to new level when he did the same to the O.A.P in front of me.
However, i always (with the odd exception) wear colours outside the ground and have never had any real problems, even at Swansea. I'm guessing that's a luxury league fans can't really afford.
On the whole I find away trips in the Conference a joy, even though there are occasions where there are yobs, and the police try (and sometimes fail) to control everything.
