Just got a new IBM Thinkpad from ebay.

One or two questions - In the product description it said 60gb harddrive, yet in System Information it only says it has 51.4gb. Should I send it back?

Also the processor speed in system information keeps changing, from 600mhz to 1.8ghz, is this normal? It's supposed to be 1.8ghz. Could it be overheating?

Yep thats Intel's "Speedstep" technology, when idle the processor slows right down to 600Mhz as soon as more power is required it goes up to its max speed in a matter of milliseconds.

Its just to prolong battery life, and keep it cool.

Right click My Computer, Properties... should say in the window that pops up.

Or look in the BIOS for something like Cool 'n' Quiet, SpeedStep or whatever.

51.4 gig is probably the formatted capacity. I have a laptop with a 40gig drive in it, formatted capacity is 35gig.

Does it have a mobile processor? Mobile processors have power saving features (AMD has PowerNow and Intel has SpeedStep) that basically lower the voltage and cpu speed according to the load the system is under. The idea is, the system only uses as much power as necessary rather than running at full power all the time.
