Our quest takes us further towards home, the four-wheeled human-transporter hurtling there at hair-raising speeds. This mission began a mist blown morn, equipped with a rather odd sensation as I shivered in my seat despite the day being warm. By now the heat and the sweeping, circling mists have both retired. Stars shine atop the deepest blue in existence, the moon at a half. I enquire with my sidekick as to how long it will be before we arrive home.

“We’re nearly there now.”

Ah yes, our venture is drawing to a close. I spy away into the distance, and for the first time it becomes apparent that our path is not as clear as we had anticipated. A lorry is blocking our route, two of three lanes to freedom closed. We are robbed of our speed.

“Watch out ahead.”

I ensure the eyes of my sidekick at the wheel are firmly on the road. The unfortunate blockage means we are sat in wait for a while as vehicles around us depart through the only gap, our turn not looking imminent. Here is where our quest is dropped into danger. Two caped men, clothed in purple and black, emerge from the hillside. They stand proud, tall, their sleek black hair and tight figures set against dreamy skies.

“Look…look over there.” I warned.

”I can see, it’s starting to clear, cars are get-“

”No, over there…look.”

My partner blanked me and with the figures advancing on us I had to make a move. I grabbed my trusty ray gun from my top pocket and aimed it towards the men. The bursts of atomic green were enough to hold them up but they were still bound for us.

“Watch out with that thing!”

I was unable to grasp how this berk sat next to me still hadn’t seen them. With the gun coming to no effect, I had no other option. I knew it, and he would too if he was paying attention. The switch had to be pressed. It would mean the end of us, but the end of them too, the end of this horrible plot against the world. For the good of mankind I had to press it. I had to destroy ourselves and the squadron of evil that threatened people everywhere. I swallowed an enormous gulp, breathed an enormous breath. They would be my last of each. I unfastened my hands and slammed my right index finger down on the red switch marked “Emergency – Self-Destruct”. I shut my eyes tight and gripped my seat as our vehicle was blasted with scolding air, flame, ash. I couldn’t see it, but I felt every inch of it rip through my skin.

“Come on, son, we don’t need the heater on now, do we? It’s the middle of summer.”

It’s too late. He has already succumbed to the heat.
He’s done for.

Randomly... good.

I enjoyed it with a baffled smile on my face.

You're still an excellent wordsmith despite your shameful absence.

Crazy people everywhere! I like this. Seemed genuinely cracked. At first I thought it was a child's fantasy thing, but no, I don't think it is. Just some crazy person.

I knew where this was leading from about the second sentence down.

And yet, it didn't detract from producing a smile...

I liked that story...
