I haven't reinstalled in well over six months and my system is only slightly slower than it was when Windows was fresh.

re-installing is a massive nightmare.
any problems i've had have been fixed with a bit of detective work, some registry tinkering and a few cleaner tools.
it's a shame that a mere 6 months is enough to cripple windows to such a degree :S

Windows tends to deteriorate after around 6 months or so, or so the theory says anyway (the registry is the main culprit)
Some people do regular re-installs, others prefer not to.

Just re-install the operating system.
