Qualifying saw defending champions Renault and the B.A.R's jump straight out of the blocks with stunning times to take the front 2 rows. Button looked particularly impressive as he took pole position, his 4th career pole position and first in Australia, by a comfortable margin, breaking the lap record in the process.
The Renaults took 2nd and 3rd with Pizzonia just pipping Barrichello. Pantano took 4th with Verstappen in 5th. Montoya will be disappointed with 6th looking at the times with Salo and Sato completing the top 8. The defending champion Baumgartner had to settle for 13th.
Full qualifying results:

So, with rival teams Renault and B.A.R going head to head and a few more consistent names in the midfield, the start of the season was upon us.
The drama started straight away on lap 1 when Webber tapped Sato around. Heidfeld ran off the track on that lap as well as Alonso and De La Rosa tangling and running off the track.
The first retirement of the new season was the winner of Round 18 last season and the person from pole position, Jenson Button. Having lost the lead on the first lap, Button pushed too hard into the last corner and crashed into the wall on lap 2.
We didn't have to wait for the next retirement as, on lap 3, Klien hits Ralf Schumacher, knocking Panis off the track. Klien spins across the track, leading to Firman hitting him. Firman came off worse with a missing left front wheel and retirement. Klien survived with just a missing front wing.
De La Rosa was a spinner on lap 9 before Panis was forced to retire from the race with a right rear suspension failure on lap 12. Karthikeyan made a small mistake on lap 14 when he ran off the track.
Barrichello, at this point, was in the lead of the race by about 5 seconds until his car developed transmission and brake problems, the transmission finishing his race on lap 28.
The race was now on between Pizzonia and Pantano for the lead. Pantano went for an ambitious move on Pizzonia and spun trying to overtake on lap 40. The next lap saw Karthikeyan retire with a left front suspension failure.
The World Champion was the next to retire when an oil leak turned the back of Baumgartner's car into a fireball on lap 44. The last retirement was on lap 55, when Michael Schumacher and Heidfeld spin during an overtaking move, Schumacher stuck in the middle of the track and Salo flying into Schumacher's front wing. Salo had to retire with a missing left front wheel and Schumacher needed a new front wing.
We were left with a dramatic finale when Pizzonia started to slow down in the lead and Montoya started to hunt him down. Montoya couldn't find a way round and had to settle for 2nd.
That means that Renault start the season as they left last season, top of the Constructors Championship table after Pizzonia's win but they have to share it with Williams after Montoya's 2nd place finish and teammate Sato finishing in 7th. Villeneuve's Ferrari was 3rd with B.A.R having to settle for just 4th place with Pantano. Jordan had a quiet race with Fisichella in 5th. Ralf Schumacher gives Toyota a solid start with 6th and Verstappen gives Minardi a point with 8th.

I was testing you - just to make sure you were actually awake. Either that or I screwed up big time :D
I know I wanted to avoid a clash with De La Rosa but I didn't mean I wanted to start last on the grid! A very quiet race for Raikkonen. He didn't even get a mention in the race blurb.
Still up 13 places shows that someone remembered to put an engine in the car between qualifying and racing :D
