In those days, although they were small, they produced some of the best and most original games.
Things haven't changed over the years. They were the company who invented the view chane we take for granted in every racing games.
They were the company who bought us the excellent Sonic and were the Grand Daddy of 2D and 3D beat 'em up games.
They were the company who bought us the first, proper, 3D console racing games.
They were the company who bought us the first CD based 32 and 128 bit consoles, however unpopular they were.
With ,arguably, the most talented and innovative game developers a gaming world without Sega is almost unthinkable.
If Sega were to crack the console market again it would have to be, maybe, beyond the next gen of consoles. When thay have regained the respect and confidence of the game buyers.
Unfortunately i cant see this happening for years to come because the gaming community is still overcome with the Playstation brand.
When the playstation brand has finished it's "honeymoon" period thenn maybe they will be in a strong enough position to become number one again.

Yeah, but Sega will wait until someone else is releasing a new console, get in there early by 4 months, promote it for 8 months after release and retire gracefully.
Happened with Saturn (with PSX) and Dreamcast (PS2).
So, wait for Sony to release the PS3 before Sega return to the marketplace.
For a start there are all the people that used to buy Sega consoles. There will now be no more of these, for a while. so all these people will buy which ever console Sega develop most for.
There will also be all the people that feel disenchanted with the PS2, which i suspect there are a significant number. These people will have no doubt have heard the reputation of Sega (who hasn't), and ma well go for which ever console Sega backs the most.
Another thing, it wouldnt surprise me if Sega released another console in a few years time. Kids who grow up with 'Cube, XBox and PS2 will come to know Sega for making great games, no for the "flop" of the Saturn, and in some peoples eyes, the DC as well.
When Sega has built it's bank balance up a bit, and got back the respect it really shouldnt have lost in the first place, they may well release another machine.
Kids will want to continue playing the excellent Sega games and so they will buy Sega machines.
