Why don't scriptwriters ever use famous characters together in films?

One huge name will pull in a crowd, no matter what the film is like, Indiana Jones or even Batman show this to be true, so what would happen if you team up two or more of our heroes in one film. No, I don't mean Indiana Jones and Batman, that would just be silly! I mean how about Dr Jones meeting Lara Croft or The Mummy (perhaps working with Brendan Fraiser's character) OK, so maybe not the best idea in the world.

I'm sure there are plenty of fine examples where this could work. A Superman film, for instance, would be big - whoever stared as the man of steel, but to have Superman and Batman together (and no, not directed by Schumaker..) would be an even bigger crowd puller. On the same note, with the big Spidy film coming out soon, having him working with the X-men would be fantastic.

OK, off of the subject of Superheroes, and on to other characters, Freddy Kruger and Jason? There's a scary thought, Terminator vs Godzilla perhaps? Buffy vs Lestat - from Interview with a Vampire, now that would be interesting!

Of course the big one that never got off the ground, despite having a story already written in comic book form, is Aliens vs Predator. They've written the comic, made the game, surely a film should be next! As everyone knows Predator II had an Alien skull in the ship at the end, so there was a hint that this might get made, but it just seems to have been forgotton. Such a pity as these two giants of modern monster movies could so easily have made the sparks fly on screen and the action would have been explosive.

Oh well, maybe we'll never get to see Mulder and Scully take on the Blair Witch, but perhaps it's all for the best....

Ha! Lots of replies here, I think that's a great idea that works well - I mean Men in Black had TLJ and Will Smith, and was incredibly successful, but I really do like your idea, which is one shared by many across the industry I am positive! Batman versus Superman or simply working with Superman could be funny, but no doubt there'd be a thousand and one fans of each complaining so it wouldn't happen! How about, Ronan keating in a film with Clint Eastwood where Ronan's like a prodigle child, returned ro meet his dad and partake in his father's wishes for him to continue the family trend of being the world's greatest Jockey - all in black and white with Tom Jones, Fred Durst and Ralph Lauren as extras playing various different roles. Could work? Couldn't it?
